BOSTON (CBS) Customs officers at Logan International Airport seized about $27,000 from an Indonesian couple, including $4,900 that was sewn inside a womans underwear.
The incident happened November 8, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers said.

Every country I've entered in recent years (including the US) has asked if you're carrying over "X" dollars,pounds,euros,yen,etc in cash or convertible instruments...and that sum usually comes to something close to $10,000 US dollars.If you don't declare it it can be seized.
I recently saw a video on youtube about a British government agency that questions people at Heathrow who are *leaving* the country and if you're found to be carrying large sums of cash they can demand that you give proof that it's "legitimate". And if they're not satisfied with your proof they seize it.
