My mom took us to quite a few Mets games at Shea in the 60’s.
I remember well the McCovey shift. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The first baseman would shift straight over second base with the rest of the infield playing deep on his pull side. One time while watching this he hit a pop-up straight to center field. All three outfielders were standing at the 410 mark in center watching it clear the wall. I thought it would never come down. Loved you, Willie!

I remember the Red’s manager (Dave Johnson?) saying one time before a series with SF that teams should intentionally walk McCovey with the bases loaded. That situation occurred in one of the games and the Reds pitched to him and McCovey hit a grand slam.

Would have hated playing first base when he was batting. RIP Stretch

This is very sad news. Being a life-long Giants fan, growing up, Willie McCovey was my all-time favorite baseball player. Boy he had a beautiful swing and in his prime, he was the most feared batter in baseball. I remember the Cubs shifting their entire defense to the right when McCovey came to bat. I actually saw his very last game at Candlestick in 1980.
In a world where everything was normally focused on the other Willie,(Mays), Willie McCovey was a spectacular player and teammate and performed with incredible grace and dignity,
RIP Stretch, you were one of the best.

Not many could rope like Willie could. Bobby Richardson’s, (My favorite player and person), glove hand still hurts! (Old timers will get that one!) RIP Big Guy.

As a twelve year old kid in little
league, I was honored to witness
Willie during a batting exposition
promoting little league in our area.
He hit six consecutive balls over the
center field fence. The power of his
bat was phenomenal. RIP Willie.

I remember when I was 11 I saw Willie McCovey knock one out of Shea. Been a Mets fan through thick and thin, but I was impressed. RIP
