When Ryan Strasser, then an associate at Hogan Lovells in Washington, D.C., got down on one knee and asked Sarah Jones Dickens to marry him, he knew one thing: Shed like the ring.
It was 4.06 carats, a near-colorless, old European cut brilliant diamond, mounted in platinum with 14 diamond accents. And it fit what he says were her must-have requirements: 3.5 to 5 carats with an inclusion rating of no worse than VS2 and a color rating of no worse than G, and with no fluorescence.
The price? $100,000.
And then, 11 months later they broke up.
According to Strasser, now an associate at Troutman Sanders in Richmond, Virginia, Dickens wont return the ringwhich hes stuck paying off until 2020.

He probably got off cheap, and should chalk this learning experience up to renting instead of buying.
Be high maintenance
Rent instead of buy? Rings? Or women?
Yup. $100,000 is a cheap lesson when the graduation fee would have been half his assets plus half his retirement account plus any bonus payments for children, plus associated fees to normalize the former lifestyle.
Why buy the whole cow?
Any guy who would listen to her demands for the size diamond she wanted should be glad to be rid of her. She sounds like a bitch and he sounds like an idiot.
She broke up with him.
The article was not blocked for me.
I believe this is settled law. It is a gift and she gets to keep it.
Rule is once you give it to her, its hers. If the engagement is broken before there was a marriage, the guy when he cools off ultimately realizes he got off cheap and was very lucky at that. Fagettabawt the ring.
since the article isn’t viewable without registering, could you summarize the part that wasn’t posted in your own words?
That should have been a warning sign ...
This idiot did not see this as big trouble??
I got lavender jade. Technically only semi-precious but I like it and it did not break the bank. He protested that he should spend three month's salary on the ring. I told him that was silly when we could be using that money for a house payment.
Oh and yes, she should give it back if she is a decent person. Which she probably isn't.
GMTA, beat me by less than two minutes.
If you Google “Ryan Strasser,” the article with the title as shown will show up as one of the results. When I click on that version of the link, the whole story appears.
