Which States Will Legalize Marijuana In 2018?

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last five years, then you know that there are now 8 states that have legalized cannabis for adult use. Colorado and Washington State legalized cannabis in 2012, Oregon, Alaska (and Washington D.C.) legalized cannabis in 2014, and Massachusetts, Maine, Nevada, and California legalized cannabis in 2016. All of those states (and D.C.) legalized cannabis via the citizen initiative process.

Going into 2017 it seemed like at least one state would legalize cannabis via legislative action, and Vermont was very close to doing so until its Governor vetoed a legalization bill that was passed by Vermont’s Legislature. With 2017 coming to a close and 2018 right around the corner, many people are wondering which states will legalize cannabis in 2018. 2018 is a mid-term election year, and at least one state seems likely to see legalization on the ballot.

Because the 'Stop Smoking' campaign has been so successful, the use of cannabis is possibly the only solution to replace the cigarette taxes with some other form of addiction.

Old article.

Hat to say it, but money is being made in cannabis stocks and will continue.

Right. I had no idea that legislators would approve the manufacture etc., of another addictive product. Clearly, they have no conscience re; health costs, impaired driving and other risks to society. They just want those lost cigarette taxes replaced.

A mature marijuana industry could generate up to $28 billion in tax revenues for federal, state, and local governments, including $7 billion in federal revenue: $5.5 billion from business taxes and $1.5 billion from income and payroll taxes.

That is contradicted by the fact that until VT legalized early this year, it was all done by ballot. Even blue state politicians have generally been opposed.

Politicians are at odds with where the people want to be on this issue.

I could be wrong about this, but the personal use of marijuana has probably neared its peak. There may be some who will decide to abuse marijuana when it is no longer illegal, but as with the end of Prohibition, by the time marijuana is generally legal, all the people who want to smoke weed will already be smoking weed.

Perhaps the marijuana industry should hire this person as a spokesman. I've heard that he's very persuasive (as long as the teleprompter is working).

I stand corrected - the courts decide which issues appear on State ballots. So any law can be overturned by ballot. That is a bit scary;(

I dunno... unless you are restricting your target market to gay men, maybe a little more of a cisnormative spokesman might be needed. That one looks really gay. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that...)

You can legally smoke it in Maine in your own home, You just can’t buy it as the state has not set up the rules for sale. They have also muddied the waters by changing the rules for medical marihuana. Most people are working under the med rules so recreational pot sales really won’t make much difference.

Thanks for the ping.

I can’t speak to 2018 but here in Florida I know there is some serious $$$ behind getting full recreational cannabis on the ballot for 2020.

Since medical cannabis passed by 71% in 2016 I’d say it’s likely Florida will be a full legal state after the 2020 elections. Of course the prohibitionist state gov’t will waste tax dollars fighting it & after it’s voted in at the ballot box they will waste even more tax dollars implementing a unconstitutional framework again & on & on lol

In the end, the will of the voter will prevail.
