That's a big deal, because it could lead to much smaller and cheaper particle accelerators than the ones we currently rely on.
Right now, if you want to install a Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator in your back garden, you need a concrete tunnel about 27 kilometres (nearly 17 miles) long and US$5 billion in spare change.
But this new experiment uses something known as plasma wakefield acceleration and it takes up just 10 metres or 33 feet of space.
The team behind the Advanced Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration Experiment (AWAKE) at CERN in Geneva has been working for five years to get a result like this, and while it's still early stages, this could end up driving a huge improvement in the way we examine the fundamental physics of the world.

Only 33 feet!!
I’ll start digging now.
But since Trump is President, he would tell Musk to hit the road.

Could put one in my basement. Design it to create a black hole to suck liberals into an eternity of darkness, not that they would notice any difference.
Preliminary design to begin tomorrow.
Ah. You very own Oblivion Gate.
Nice.
Hooray for Sheldon and his short roommate.
Dr. Sheldon Cooper is tickled pink.
Wonderful! Now I can sleep at night without fretting over the size of particle accelerators.
Compact, inexpensive high-energy accelerators are kind of like Pandora’s Box.
Im trying to figure out how they got AWAKE out of Advanced Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration Experiment. Advanced blah blah WAKEfield blah blah? Liberals love acronyms and its a sure bet a liberal committee made this one up. If they were honest it would be APDPWFAE. Because it is a Wake Field not Wakefield which is a place.
Sounds like the beginnings of a new weapon.

Need any help?
Read somewhere that the arc on a typical plasma arc cutter runs 45,000 degrees.
The climate change scientists should take a look at this and see what the folks at CERN have done. Develop a theory, state a hypothesis, design a reproducible experiment, analyze the results and determine if the results support the hypothesis or disprove it. Repeat and refine the hypothesis and theory to match the results obtained. You know, the scientific method.
As opposed to how climate change science works, ie. develop a theory then jigger the results until they match the theory.
Don’t you need a discombobulator to do that?
Everyone is getting Woke.
Yeah, I think yer right.
My first thought too, weaponized particle accelerator.
Gonna get my phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range yet.
