Two vessels collided head-on in a stretch of the river near Topock Gorge and Park Moabi Channel, authorities said. The area is not far from the Arizona border.
The force of the crash caused one of the boats to sink; the other sustained heavy damages, according to a tweet from the Fire Department.
Two people are missing and presumed submerged, according to the tweet.
At least 12 patients were treated, including one with life-threatening injuries who was airlifted to a Las Vegas-area trauma center. Six people received moderate injuries, while the remaining patients were treated for minor injuries.

Yep; the river gets crazy on weekends. Especially holiday weekends. People break out their fancy boat toys that will go 90 mph. Next thing you know someone in another boat isn’t where they are expected to be and... wham. People die from this all time. I’m actually surprised it doesn’t happen more often.
The locals know to stay off the water on weekends.
Yep, parts of the river got crazy 40 years ago, can’t imagine what it’s like now.
Yeah, I made the mistake of taking a river to a lake in FL on a weekend. It was a big time party lake for rich kids in their $75k boats. Every time one of them flew past me, I had to turn our little sailboat sideways so their wake wouldn’t flip us over.
Lost a good friend to a boating accident..years ago at Lake Havasu.
It was during spring break & the river/lake was packed with people..so many boats that you could literally jump from one to another.
I never went back.
The 'friendly' Fox River in Illinois is a classic example.

My house is right down the road and I never take my boats out on the Holiday Weekends. But this happens all the time here, and there are usually a half dozen or so on Holidays.
With NO moon, going through Topock can be pretty wild, I have done it ONCE and will NEVER try again.

All we know is that they've been underwater a long time.

I'd guess only tourists and the college crowd would ignorant enough to do that. That's really the last place you want to be during that time. I personally wouldn't go there at that time even with all expenses paid.

I live 100 yards from it and hear the maniacs and their cigarette boats all the time.
