Happytime Murders (Rated R Puppet Movie) A Solo Career B.O. Low For Melissa McCarthy (tr)

[snip]

Which brings us to STX Entertainment’s raunchy, R-rated Melissa McCarthy-puppet comedy, The Happytime Murders, which is dead and wrapped in plastic with a $10.2M start, repping the Groundling alum’s lowest wide opening ever for one of her solo films – not counting St. Vincent, which was a platform release. Happytime Murders’ opening is even lower than McCarthy’s May PG-13 title Life of the Party ($17.9M), which we thought was rock bottom.

For the most part, raunchy comedies in the wake of STX’s own Bad Moms and Sony/Annapurna’s Sausage Party two summers ago just continue to bomb or remain stifled at the domestic box office. We’ve often blamed streaming for encroaching on the genre and stealing away such talent like Adam Sandler. However, distributors remain hopeful that laughter will rise again. Just look at how Crazy Rich Asians rebooted the romantic comedy. Comedy is generational, built on stars, and some believe that the depression for the R-rated titles is attributable to the fact that we’re between generations now. Jim Carrey, Ben Stiller, and Adam Sandler have grown up, and the younger audience has yet to dial into a new fresh batch of talent. Next year, The Hangover turns 10. If there’s hope left this year, it’s in Tiffany Haddish and Kevin Hart, who have Night School opening on Sept. 28.

But rather than blame the raunchy comedy B.O. recession, there seems to be a missed opportunity here with The Happytime Murders by both STX and McCarthy. Out of all the comedies this year, this one looked fresh, and quite different for McCarthy. But the movie was never propped up as a summer comedy event by STX for reasons we’ll explain soon.

No. Because what goes for “comedy” these days is just endless bashing of Conservatives.

But Hollywood will keep trying to pretend this unfunny woman is a talent and the only reason people aren't interested in sexism.

It seemed like a good idea at the time ...

It might have been good as a sketch on a comedy show.

As one who mainly watches KDramas now for entertainment, I’m thrilled to see “Crazy Rich Asians” kicking tail at the BO.

Team America will always be the best “puppet” movie, ever.

Are you sure it wasn’t the puppets’ fault?

I stream a radio station on Radio.com and I hear the commercial for this movie three times every ad break. It’s driving me nuts.

I hate advertising "techniques" such as that one.

Just out of school, I had housemates. I complained about a BK commercial running seemingly ad infinitum. One read in the WSJ about BK wanting people to see the new ad at least 19 times in one week.

(Apparently, I wasn't the only one annoyed by it, and it was pulled in less than a week)

There's something about McCarthy I just can't stand.

Her shtick is very similar to Robin Williams in the sense of of a complete disdain for pacing/timing.

And I don't get her humor.

Robin Williams had EXQUISITE comic timing. The rapid — MANIC — delivery pace was unusual but part of how it worked.

>>And I don’t get her humor.<<

Nothing to get. The bigger question is why anyone pays her a dime and why we even know who she is.

I saw the trailer at the movies. It was hilarious but definitely crossed the line. I figure all the funny stuff was In the trailer.

Is there anything at all they put out that is not garbage?

Oddly this project seems a bit more creative and daring and thus potentially better than most of the slop released.

the difference between Sandler, Stiller and carey, is Carey is far more physically talented (think Lewis and keaton) but he has gone way off his meds.

Anyone know what platform release of a movie is?

Personally I’m boycotting Hollyweird and crap like this just further cements it.

Never heard it, but it can’t be worse than Kars for Kids.

A platform release is a limited release to less than 600 theaters.
