Welcome to Wednesday night Bible study!
Last week I started a weekly vlog series on the historical reasons the New Testament was written, starting with the first book, Galatians (49 AD).
This week's video, part 2, is why James was written (50 AD).
Video clocks in at 12:15. Thanks for watching!

This is the official ping list for Depths of Pentecost: Im a Christian blogger who writes weekly Bible lessons. Topics range from Bible studies, apologetics, theology, history, and occasionally current events. Every now and then I upload sermons or classes onto YouTube.
Let me know if youd like to added to the Depths of Pentecost ping list. New posts are up every Saturday.

I'd burn in hell before I did any of those things.
You're a self-aggrandizing fame-seeker.
I know how you feel about bloggers, and I perfectly understand because fame-seekers can be annoying. But I’m in it purely for the love of the discussion of the subject matter (and I try to be respectful by making sure I post them in General or Religion, depending on the relevance).
By the way, I’ve been posting these on FR for months now. What took you this long to notice?
humblegunner: I have enjoyed some of your posts and replies. I have also enjoyed reading pcouttaux’s posts. Is there something wrong in his posts? I’m just asking. God bless.
It sounds like it could be an interesting topic. Why is it in video rather than text form?
HG, take your meds.
Or else just don’t read blog posts if you don’t want to.
But stop presuming to police what everybody else can choose or choose not to read.
I watched his james video and he is very well versed. Very knowledgeable, not boring at all. God bless this guy to make more.
Good historical information on the role of commerce, wealth, and discrimination. Also ties in well with your previous presentation on the debate over the Law and the Judaizers.
The council in Acts mentioned 2 or 3 other things in addition to the food offered to idols: eating blood / meat from animals that had been strangled, and fornication.
This was the first church council and rendered a unanimous decision followed by a Spirit-inspired but brief letter (also penned by James) to the churches. It is important to remember that this ruling is still applicable to believers today. The admonition against food offered to idols is reiterated in the writings of Paul and John.
The blood issue goes back to God’s original provision to Noah and his descendants (which is all of us) allowing us to eat meat. God specifically said not to eat the blood. The Jews were faithful in obeying this because it was encoded into the Law and was also part of an elaborate tradition.
The fornication issue is more than what we typically think of as being about premarital or extramarital sex. It was specifically incorporating the Levitical ordinances on sexuality. This means that incestuous and homosexual marriages would not be recognized in the church. So, for example, when Herod married his brother’s wife and John the Baptist denounced this, he was applying the part of the Law that was always applicable to Gentiles.
Looking forward to your further posts. Are you planning to do a background for all of the books of the New Testament?
Humblegunner's hatred of bloggers on FR is legendary. I can understand it if people post mindless drivel or the links to their blogs are clearly clickbait or self-promoting. But that's not me. I enjoy teaching and discussing the Bible and there's a lot of fellow Bibliophiles who enjoy my stuff on FR (and a few critics, but I digress).
I thought this was especially amusing:
You're a self-aggrandizing fame-seeker.
Fame-seeker? By making YouTube videos about New Testament history, posted in the general section of a right-wing political forum?
The last video I linked here got 120 views. I tell ya, fame and fortune are just around the corner!
People have said worse to me on Twitter.
WAY worse. ;)
I do write weekly blogs if you're interested, I put them up every Saturday.
I'm also a teacher and I've wanted to start a YouTube channel for a long time. I thought a video series on why each book of the New Testament was written would be a lot of fun.
Ok, I’ll make it 121. :)
Stop presuming to police what I post, you presumptive presumer.
A touch superficial; the whole admonition as penned in James’s letter (found in Acts) generated by the first Ekklesia Council should be emphasized, since ‘it seemed good to the Holy Spirit’ ... and more depth on what James sought to iterate regarding works and faith is wanting.
Is it the content which wells up such anger? ... You okay with religion so long as it’s sequestered in buildings and not invading your consciousness? Do you perhaps hear a faint knocking on the door?
Seems more like it's people promoting their own content, passing themselves off as experts.
Doesn't it seem like that's my issue, since I did not address the "content" at all?
If you don’t address the “content,” how do you know whether or not I’m an expert?
The point of the video...and every video I’m making on the New Testament books...was to address the historical context for why the book was written. That would have gone into the deeper theological content of James. This is the line I tread with each lesson..how far to go into each. Ultimately there does come a point where I have to let the viewer take what I’ve taught and delve into the book his or herself.
Thanks, Sharkie!
