Lincoln would have beat him hands down with MMA rules in effect.

Or just about any set of rules one could name. Lincoln was unnaturally strong. Had been the wrestling champion of his town. Douglas was sickly, as well as (or because he was) a heavy smoker and drinker. Not to mention short.

The problem of how to transfer photographs to mass printed magazines was harder than laying a cable across the Atlantic.

I’m confused by the left-hand picture on page 25. I don’t see what’s wrong with “the lovely Miss Smith of Louisiana,” except that she appears to be levitating, rather than walking, up the stairs. Is the gentleman’s objection that she’s a ghost?

Maybe it has to do with seeing her sans makeup with hair down and prepared for bed.

Ladies generally didn’t wear makeup in those days, and I would think seeing her with her hair down and in her nightgown would be ... ahem ... inspirational. Did he think she would wear street clothes 24/7 when they were married?

Re page 12, do I correctly understand that the United States defeated Canada in the cricket match by a considerable margin?
I have a FRiend here in N.C. who used to live in an apartment complex with many programmers from South Asia. They would have India vs. Pakistan cricket matches in the parking lots on weekends.

Well, this hasn't changed much in 150 years. Any Democrat who crosses the fire eaters can expect instant denunciation.
I offer Alan Dershowitz as Exhibit A.
