A decomposing body was found inside the entrance column of a supermarket in Lancaster on Saturday, and investigators believe it may be a chase suspect who escaped authorities earlier this week.
...
LASD Lt. John Corina said the manager of the store smelled a strong odor from the column in front of the business. He assumed it was a sewage leak and called out a plumber to check it out.
The plumber and store's handyman then broke off some of the brick from the column and found a leg and shoe inside, Corina said.
Corina said the unidentified suspect ran away after a traffic stop in the area. He ran into the WinCo store and possibly onto the roof, but deputies were not able to locate him.
There is access on the roof to the fascia of the store and down into the column, Corina said.

Probably thought it would be a good hiding place. Think again.
Darwin Award candidate. The gene pool just jumped up a few points.
Lancaster used to be a quiet and peaceful place. I was born and raised there. Sad to see it now.
Lancasters newest Hide and Seek Champion Isssss.....
Drumroll....
Or he thought it led out to somewhere. Either way, must have been a heck of a way to die. I think for me, the worst of it would to have died standing up. It probably took 3 to 4 days without water to die. I suppose one’s body would figure out how to sleep standing up, but man - I can’t imagine having to stand for 3 days straight.
I’m surprised he couldn’t yell loud enough for folks to hear him. Although perhaps he fell head first and died instantly.
I lived in Lancaster for 15 years it WAS a great place to live, after they built the prison there it started to go downhill very quickly families of the prisoners moving into the area to be close for visiting purposes!!! That AND the illegal immigration situation has turned the area into a dump!!! It was a GREAT area at one time with Boeing and Lockheed Martin there, real estate was very reasonable for CA. and the weather wasnt extreme for the high desert!!! I agree it is sad to see such a nice area go to hell in a hand basket BUT it has happened all over the state!!!
Did the Plumber then go to His Van and take off the overalls that said Acme Plumbing and put on a different set that said Acme Funeral Home and then switch out the magnetic signs on the van ?
I believe that would be CSP LA County. Knowing what I know about California prisons, its possible, he may have recently paroled from there.
Any contact with police, is an automatic trip back to the big house. Maybe thats why he wanted to get away. Who knows for sure?
Probably died from the fall since it takes a few days for the stink to develop...and no one heard anything.
Now, there is a liability issue for the general contractor. Leaving an open column was an attractive nuisance.
Probably thought it would be a good hiding place.

It was a good hiding place! OK, perhaps a bit *too* good.
Prayers to his family... May God comfort him...
I don’t think he went head first. They pulled away the bricks and found his shoe and leg. If they thought it was a sewage they’d be pulling near the bottom. I bet what happened is that he got stuck and died about 12 hours later when the temperature went over 100.
I contend that a 'good' hiding place should have a functioning exit of some kind.
Some folks refer to Lancaster as “Sandblaster”.
And the car was stolen?
