EATING IN THE FIFTIES
Pasta had not been invented. It was macaroni or spaghetti.
Curry was a surname.
Taco? Never saw one till I was 15.
All chips were plain.
Oil was for lubricating, fat was for cooking.
Tea was made in a teapot using tea leaves and never green.
Cubed sugar was regarded as posh.
Chickens didn't have fingers in those days.
None of us had ever heard of yogurt.
Healthy food consisted of anything edible!
Cooking outside was called camping.
Seaweed was not a recognized food.
'Kebab' was not even a word... never mind a food.
Sugar enjoyed a good press in those days, and was regarded as being white gold.
Prunes were medicinal and stewed.
Surprisingly Muesli was readily available. It was called cattle feed.
Pineapples came in chunks or were round with a hole in the middle, in a tin; we had only ever seen a picture of a real one.
Water came out of the tap. If someone had suggested bottling it and charging more than gasoline for it, they would have become a laughing stock.
There were three things that we never ever had on/at our table in the fifties . . . elbows, hats and cell phones!
......and there was always two choices for each meal...
"Take it" or Leave it"
A Bride on her 4th Wedding.
A woman who had been married three times walked into a bridal shop and told the sales clerk that she was looking for a wedding gown for her fourth wedding. "Of course, madam," replied the sales clerk, "exactly what type and color dress are you looking for?" The bride-to-be said, "A long frilly white dress with a veil." "Please don't take this the wrong way, madam, but such dresses are usually more fitting for the first time bride who is more innocent in the ways of life, if you get my meaning." "WELL!" replied the customer, a little peeved at the clerk's directness, "I can assure you that a white gown would be quite appropriate. Believe it or not, despite all my marriages, I remain as innocent as a first-time bride. You see, my first husband was so excited about our wedding, he had a heart attack due to an unknown congenital condition as we were checking into our honeymoon hotel. My second husband and I got into such a terrible fight in the limo on our way to our honeymoon hotel that we had that wedding annulled immediately and never spoke to each other again." "What about your third husband?" "That one was a Democrat", said the woman, "and every night for four years, he just sat on the edge of the bed and told me how good it was going to be, but nothing ever happened."
That one I know is wrong.
The fifties were the birth of the great "grilling movement".
Notice I did not say barbecuing. That is something else entirely.
many of our families got that grill using Sand H green stamps obtained from shopping at stores using that as a come on.
I guess I have her to thank for my 4 heart attacks! ;-)
My Aunt Barb raised 5 children on Her own. She took no prisoners, She was the Law and She carried a BIG WOODEN SPOON! At the table rule number one: No elbows on the table except for the Prayer after that everyone was to be polite, Please and Thank You, no talking with food in your mouth and NO ELBOWS ON THE TABLE! If there were any memory lapses about the Rules the offender got THE SPOON!!!
She never missed the target and I speak from experience it was not a simple tap with that spoon. You would have thought that spoon was a Baseball Bat in the hands of Hank Arron. Im really surprised that the spoon never broke. It must have been made out of Iron Wood.
I grew up in SoCal, in a town that had a place called Taco Tia. It eventually changed it’s name to Taco Bell....
Mrs Dad and I were at the mall Sunday morning waiting for a store to open and while we sat there two different women walked by wearing jeans that were all torn up. Her father was a tailor and we both looked at each other and said that when we were kids those jeans would’ve been cut up to use as shorts then thrown or just thrown. She said her father and mother would’ve never let her out of the house wearing clothes looking like that.
And with the advent of the Weber Kettle Grill, BBQing really took off! IIRC, that was in the early 70s.
It wasn't the eggs and butter! Transfats, carbs & sugar were the culprit.
I remember one guy saying that he never thought he'd see the day when people paid good money to look poor.
Absolutely, I discovered tacos (and enchiladas, burritos, and tamales not from a can) when we moved to Southern California in the early sixties. Now in a small city in Idaho there are Mexican restaurants (not fast food places) on every other corner. Damn I’m getting hungry.
Heart condition is more hereditary than its of us think. That, plus our less active, though Im betting your dad, uncles and grand dad probably suffered early heart failures.
This is the classic design but the grill is missing.
My Mom used what she called The Spankin' Spoon. It was a stainless steel slotted spoon normally used for dishing out food and leaving the juices behind.
She remarked that the slots left marks that would not soon be forgotten. By golly, she was right.
Something to the order of 90% of your cholesterol is manufactured by your own dang liver. Genetics does indeed play the by far largest role in arterial plaques. On top of that peoples livers put out diff % LDL (Bad) and HDL (Good).
Fats are not bad for you, your liver is.
Yep, on 1st st, changed to Del Taco in 1964. Do you remember 4 for $1 taco night? Think it was Wednesday.
Like natural sugar cane, one rarely desires to eat too much saturated fats. Sat fats take care of us feeling full after meals; unlike low fat meals where we are hungry after a short time and continue eating unhealthy foods!
Worked at a Taco Bell at about that time. Everything on the menu, tacos, tub of refried beans, tostadas, red and green bean burritos: 19¢. You could get four tacos and a Pepsi (no Coke) for a buck. Of course I was making $1.25 per hour.
Courtesy and manners was the norm in my Texas home ..... never take the last piece of chicken or pork chop etc ... while at the supper table. I still have scars on the back of my hand from the night the lights went out during a thunder storm and I reached for the last piece of ham and got stuck with a knife and two forks....
