The St. Louis Cardinals have fired manager Mike Matheny and named bench coach Mike Shildt as interim manager.
The team also relieved hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller of their duties.

Cubs fan, checked standings 10 min ago. I knew the Brewers were on a losing streak, but wasnt paying attention to the Cards. Wow, 5 game losing streak. Yep that and all star break will do it.
As a Brewers fan I will always remember Matheny for taking a pitch right in the jaw and just spitting a wad of blood and walking to first base. Never fell over, never eyeballed the pitcher.
This certainly shows that the Cards are definitely looking to win this year. It’s unusual to let a manager and the main coaches go at this point in the season. What happens during the rest of the way should be interesting.
Downside of these kinds of actions can be a drought that can last over a decade.
had to be done. Players played like idiots, he tolerated it. Mabry couldn’t convince anyone to hit like John Mabry at his best.
Good. I still remember the 1982 “Suds Series” between Milwaukee and St. Louis. Bitter rivals. Brewers up 3-1 and completely choked.
We need Kissell and Schoendienst now more than ever.
I was 13 when that happened and I have never forgotten it. In those instances no one would blame him if he dropped to the ground and screamed in agony.
McGee won the series and Porter got the hardware.
Cardinals are a respectable organization and the fans are awesome. Curious to let go of the manager at this point. Why not wait until the end of the year? Tommy Pham is not going to get the Cardinals in the WS.
My guess is that Matheny has another job lined up and is leaving graciously.
The Cardinal clubhouse started to get contentious, and Matheny didn’t manage it. You can have disorderly clubhouses in some cities, but not in the Cardinal organization, and not in that ball park.
His son Tate and Diamondbacks Manager Torey Louvello’s son both play for the Portland Maine AA Sea Dogs. And both are doing pretty good, I expect to see them move up the ladder.
Matheny had a higher win percentage than all of Schoendiest, Herzog and LaRussa, and we are talking Hall of Fame managers I believe here.
I suspect that management may not have been happy with how some of the younger players were developing, and some of the decisions he was making on who would play, how he was utilizing his players.
Ask the Astros how respectable they are.
A five game losing streak gets a manager *hired* in San Diego. Ribbit :(
Wow,did not know that! Husband is a rabid red sox fan. Metheny caught my eye because I thought he was gorgeous, otherwise I could care less. I am shallow ; )
As a Braves fan...
I must comment on your choice of men. /s
Look who is talking. :)
Leaning Conservative,
I apologize for my comment. It was uncalled for, since I do not know you and I should have much more respect for you than I did.
My sincere regrets for my comment.
