Singer, songwriter and actor Kristoffer Kristofferson was born on June 22, 1936, in Brownsville, Texas. Son of a military officer, Kristofferson was equal parts intellectual and athlete growing up. He was an award-winning short story writer as well as a Golden Gloves boxer. He graduated from Pomona College in 1958 with a degree in creative writing and went on to attend Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. While in England, he performed under the name Kris Carson, playing country and folk music.
After leaving Oxford, Kristofferson joined the United States Army in 1960. He served as a helicopter pilot in Germany. He turned down a teaching position at West Point to pursue his dream of becoming a successful songwriter.

"I want you to know I'm an Army brat; I was a captain in the Army and my brother was a jet pilot in the Navy. So I support our troops; I identify with them. But I sure as hell don't identify with the bastards who sent them over there."
IIRC, he used his Tenn. National Guard flight time to deliver a tape of Sunday Mornin’ Coming Down to Johnny Cash’s estate when Cash had ignored his other attempts to hear Kris’ song.
Misdiagnosed illness was Lyme.

Bkmrk.
Yeah, the way I’ve heard the story he landed the helicopter right on Cash’s lawn and walked up to the house to deliver it.
One of the best songwriters of all time.
He did. Great story.
Excellent song writer. Back in the 80’s I had a tape of Willy Nelson singing nothing but Kristofferson songs. Up until then I had no idea that Kris Kristofferson had written so many awesome songs.
He is prolific. So many great songs...
He’s got 8 kids(that we know about).
Fascinating.
Thanks for the insight.
Johnny Cash was in the Air Force.
He wrote an article in “Gun World” magazine about a Mannlicher Schoenauer rifle he bought in Germany. He said he had always wanted one. I can’t recall the caliber.
Whako leftist but he may have a point. Can’t deny his service or Oxford experience. My issue was his comparing our support for the Contras in Nicaragua with Russian genocide in Afghanistan. No comparison. No different than Ragone.
Wonder what he thinks about Ortega and his VP wife killing hundreds of anti-communist protesters over the last few weeks.
This story is completely buried by the US non Christian controlled communist press by the way.
Ping....
Lol
What a guy!
What watched “Convoy” just last night.
I will say up front. I can’t stand him. He was in a movie, I think it was Semi Tough. In it he and Nick Nolte played pro football players.
They showed a scene of them bare from the waist I guess. I remember thinking that Nolte looked like he really could have played, but Kristofferson would have been broken in two the first play. I am also surprised he was a ranger.
He certainly was a great song writer tho.
