PITTSBURGH - Local rapper Jimmy Wopo has died following a double shooting in Pittsburgh's Hill District neighborhood Monday.
The drive-by shooting was reported around 4:20 p.m. near the intersection of Wylie Avenue and Duff Street.
Wopo, whose birth name is Travon Smart, died at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital about two hours after he was shot, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office.
Channel 11 talked to Wopo's grandfather outside of the hospital.
"He has everything going for him. Everything. But the streets will kill you," James White said.
XXL Magazine recently called him one of the best and brightest new rappers.

I hate to break it to gramps, but the street didn’t do it.
4:20, so it’s a hate crime?
bright rapper is an oxymoron
And he was just turning his life around.
He was matriculating into community college.
He HAD everything going for him. Except he didn’t.
Rap music blows but I didn’t know it was a capital offense...yet.
Capitol Offense is Gov Huckabee’s band. No rapper will ever achieve that level of prominence.
Capitol Offense played for the FReeper inagural balls.
Grandpa (whos probably under 40)relates success to hundred dollar bills, women and cars.
Dude be keepin it real. That should boost his street cred.
The usual lament.
All I can say is stay the hell off the streets.
These thugs do it unto themselves...I have no sympathy.
If they had everything going for themselves, they wouldn't have to be out on the streets and they wouldn't be dead, dead, dead.
He ain't aspiring no more.
What? Haven’t blamed the NRA yet?
“YO YO YO, Listen up, word: (rhyming begins)
Poor Mr. Wopo
Shoulda listened to the popo,
cuz of the thug life he lead
Now he’s good and by that I mean dead”
In case you were wondering:
Many rappers make their name by belittling other rappers. Most of the time, it comes down to punching each other, trying to make the other guy your bichon. On rare occasions, it goes to shooting.
There is also usually drugs and money involved. Rappers don’t make much money.
Kanye’s been quiet lately....
Or Big Media has sheehaned him.
I have never understood the lure of “the streets” and why kids feel they must prove themselves there than to be a model person who stands on their own.
Live by the sword and die by the sword.
I agree. success isnt money or property or sex. Too many people get killed over this type of success. Afew ex’s might want to shoot me because Im happy. but I dont go where Im not welcome and I keep my happiness on the safe side of town .
Baby Mama, don’t name your baby Travon (or Trayvon).
I get them mixed up with The Capitol Steps.
