Democrats are meeting in Providence, R.I., this weekend to advance changes to their presidential primaries, hoping to end the bitterness that followed the 2016 election with an emphasis on hoping.
The push for changes, which began nearly two years ago at the Democrats Philadelphia convention, concerns rule revisions proposed by a Unity Reform Commission and vetted by the standing Rules and Bylaws Committee. The most high-profile battles have come over the role of superdelegates, the party leaders and members of Congress whose votes are not pledged to follow the results of any primaries.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who failed to get the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, has campaigned to end the voting power of most superdelegates, keeping the issue alive.
You had superdelegates voting for Hillary Clinton in states that I won pretty handsomely, Sanders said this week in an interview with The Washington Posts James Hohmann. And now there is agreement among Tom Perez and our people and a lot of the Clinton people to say we should reduce the number of superdelegates.
Perez, the Democratic National Committee chairman gave House Democrats a preview Tuesday of a potential compromise: Superdelegates would get no vote on the first ballot at the next Democratic convention. While they could endorse whomever they wanted, and while they would be able to attend the convention and vote on other matters, the 700-odd elected officials and party leaders who currently have automatic voting status would not vote on the presidential nominee unless the contest dragged to a second ballot.
That idea landed with a thud among some party leaders but mollified Democrats who have called for superdelegates to be abolished.

The Clintonistas would just find another way to exact their dirty pool.
Nope. This is not right. Live by the sword, die by the sword.
There is talk that no person who is not a declared Rat can run as a Dem. Guess who that is meant for. I hope they do it. It would force Bernie to 3rd Party.
If the Superdelegates go away, the quota rules wind up determining the candidate. This is bad for Slow Joe or any other white male. 51% females and 25% black representation who subsist on identity politics will make things very difficult.
Hillary Clinton: 16,914,722 (55.2%)
Bernie Sanders: 13,206,428 (43.1%)
The super delegates were the only reason Bernie Sanders had any late hope at all. All his supporters kept crossing their fingers for a Clinton indictment, which they hoped would cause the super delegates to dump her for Sanders. It's they who wanted the super delegates to veto the will of the Democratic Party primary electorate and install Sanders as the nominee (i.e., have the super delegates "steal" it).
The nonsense about super delegates also ignores the fact that Sanders got way more help from caucus states than Clinton got from super delegates. Consider this: Sanders won the state of Washington's caucus in March 2016, when fewer than 30,000 people voted, but Clinton won Washington's primary two months later in May, when over 700,000 Democrats participated. Sanders received 74 WA delegates vs. Clinton's 27 because of the whole caucus thing.
Ultimately, you look at the map, Clinton won California, won Texas, won New York, won Florida, won Illinois (all by big margins)... seriously, what was the biggest state Sanders won? Michigan, where he just squeaked by? Everything else was crap like the North Dakota caucus, wherein Sanders won with literally 250 votes.
Sorry, I have no love for Clinton, but the Bernie Bots crying about "stolen primary" is absolutely, 100% grade-A horse crap.
This sounds like the same arguments the left made after 1968. That gave them McGovern and the worst defeat the Democratic party has ever had in 1972. The superdelegate system was created after that fiasco in order to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
All his supporters kept crossing their fingers for a Clinton indictment,
I still have my fingers crossed. LOL
Clintons are being forced out.
She now has zero chance and her political future is over.
No more Hillary Clintons.
“Clintons are being forced out.”
indeed. it was no accident that Bill Clinton was blindsided with hardball questions from NBC ... NBC would never have done that unless word went out from on high for the long knives to come out for Bill Clinton, since overt targeting of heroine Hillary is still a BIG no-no ... however, taking out Bill pretty much leaves Hillary drifting without a rudder ... so they take out Hillary without actually seeming to take her out ...
(And are at least 12% of your delegates...black? Including in CA?
And are 8% of your delegates Hispanic? Including in Vemont?
And do you have sufficient Native American women voting, including Somerville/Cambridge, MA?)
RAAAAAAA-CIS.
It wasn’t really installed until 1984.
It gave Mondale a huge lead right off the bat over Hart.
Thank God Sanders got rigged out of the nomination. He would have probably beaten Trump and America would be Venezuela right now.
