I am out of the loop on a few things admittedly.
What is are the Cliff Notes about Veteran's Choice that was signed into law? I am a vet, I carry my health insurance through my employer because after what I saw the VA do to my Father; all my nopes.
I figured I would come here and open a discussion; maybe there are others in my position that do not understand fully what Veteran's Choice offers.
Thanks. Again, VANITY.
Might be of some help. I haven’t read thru it so I don’t know

I’ve used it for several different issues. Most recent was for a neck surgery of C-2>C-7 with hardware on C-3>C-7. All pre-approved through the Choice program and surgery performed. But, today I got a letter from the local VA stating the “emergency” procedure performed on that date did not qualify for coverage under rule XXXX. First of all, this is the second time they’ve addressed the same thing, it was NOT an emergency and second, it was pre-planned and approved through the VA and Choice. So, it kinda works but sometimes folks need to communicate with each other. And, I ain’t payin’ for it. Also used Choice for a colonoscopy, and my rheumatologist as well.
VA care is the best care I’ve had in my life, bar none.
A pity all VA hospitals/clinics aren't giving the same outstanding care.
Bttt.

The care we receive from the VA here in north central Florida is the best medical care we have ever received.
BOOKbump
I have not checked on it recently, but when it was offered to me (when it first passed...like 5 or so years ago)...my choice was this.
Elect to give up my rights to go to any VA in exchange for being able to go to my local hospital.
But, only that hospital. Didn’t seem like a very good choice then.
My experience is those who bitch about it are the one’s who are Priority 4 or lower.
And the VA was never designed to be primary care for those folks.
It’s REALLY good for Priority 1 and 2.
Everyone else is “space available”.
And that’s why the VA gets a bad rap.
There’[s a reason why the VFW, DAV and American Legion all oppose privatizing the VA. For vets who have a disability connected to their service, the care is the best in the world, and there are services available at VA that are not available anywhere else in the world.
Basically, how VA Choice has been working for me since 2015 is, instead of traveling 120 miles to the nearest VA Optometrist, (none at my VA clinic), for an annual eye check-up, I can now do it in my hometown and VA Choice pays for it. Very convenient.
See my #11.
Is that a Washington State flag in your profile?
If so, you are getting TOP NOTCH care.
The VA hospital in Seattle is staffed by docs from UW and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research center...and everyone there give a shit.
My dad died there from an incurable Pancratic Cancer.
Basically it’s where the VA lets you use a private doctor other than the VA facility for procedures. In my experience it’s not very good. The insurer is MUCH more exacting then the VA is. And it’s a lot more red tape. I needed a procedure done and it literally took months only for Veterans choice to tell me that it wasn’t okayed. But the VA hospital did it within a month with no hassle. I guess it all depends on how close your VA hospital is and how good it is.
Completely agree. I had to have some minor surgery done and went to the facility in Marion, IL. Wow...everyone was great. If you even look a little lost any employee will notice and help you get to where you're going. Everyone was super nice and professional...much better than any private hospital I've been in.
Are you Priority 1 or 2?
Thank you
Neither...I think priority 5?
Because they denied service connected, I just barely qualified for an 8. I make copays but I have to to cover an arthritis med. with Medicare ins, it would be $1,500/mth. Can’t do that but with the VA pharmacy accepting the choice approved docs prescription, it’s $22.00. That I can do. I’ve gone to the ER a couple of times and it was a good experience. No complaints with the local hospital. The VA admin......meh.
