Bowl food is exactly what it sounds like; food in a bowl. Were not sure what the craze is all about, but it seems to be all over Instagram. And it might have something to do with the royal wedding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle did serve bowl food, after all, when they tied the knot. Their royal lunch included pea and mint risotto, chicken fricassee and a slow-roasted pork belly, served with apple compote and crackling. So what exactly is bowl food and where has it come from?
Bowl food is larger than a canapé and about a quarter of the size of the main course. Its served in mini or hand-sized bowls with food that can be easily eaten with a fork in one hand. The idea behind a bowl food menu is that guests can stay standing up and mingle while they eat, as they would with finger food. Some caterers have described it as an option which allows guests to keep on talking. So, probably not a good idea to put steak in a bowl then. But older guests might want to have a seat and dig in.
As with most aesthetically-pleasing things, Instagram is giving a lot of love and attention to the bowl food trend. And most users have been piling on the bowl long before the royal nuptials. Avocado-loving millennials have decorated many a bowl with delicacies of their choice, from breakfast foods like eggs, porridge, fruit salads, to main meals like rice and curry, dumplings, chicken, and soup.
It makes for some pretty pictures too, with some going all out to garnish their bowls, with plenty of colourful fruits and vegetables. So if youre in the kitchen, hurry, theres a bowl that needs decorating. Whats next, plate food? Drink cups? Youll probably find it on Instagram soon.

So, the Brits are just getting round to discovering tostadas. The food of lower and middle class peasants in the American West.
I once asked a mess sergeant what something was, “White Cake, white frosting, take one and move out!”

For the royal lunchtime reception, the bowl food part of the menu included:
-Fricassee of free range chicken with morel mushrooms and young leeks
-pea and mint risotto with pea shoots, truffle oil and parmesan crisps
-10-hour slow roasted Windsor pork belly with apple compote and crackling
All the ingredients have been sourced from companies holding a royal warrant.
Wow. Really healthy and boring-looking food. I imagine the Queen - who has absolutely lovely food served in all her palaces - must have tossed it all behind a column. Undoubtedly, a Megen innovation.
With the pork belly, guess it’s a good thing the ululating crowd outside the church wasn’t invited to the reception.
Ooooh, I’m all hip! Had a bowl of yogurt for breakfast. Had a finger food sandwich for lunch and have a glass for water on the desk.
