An ancient virus that is a cousin of HIV is infecting a large portion of indigenous people in Australia, and doctors are unsure how it got to be so prevalent.
HTLV-1, or Human T-lymphotropic virus 1, is a human retrovirus that can cause harmful diseases such as bronchitis, leukemia, and lymphoma. Researchers have found traces of the virus in 1500-year-old Andean mummies.
A recent preliminary study from the Baker Institute for Heart and Diabetes in Alice Springs found that 40 percent of adults living in a remote region in Australia are infected with HTLV-1. Less than 14 percent of the population had HTLV-1 in 1993.
In addition, 30 percent of patients have diseases that could have resulted from HTLV-1. The study took place between 2015 and 2018.
"This is probably the highest-ever reported prevalence in any population," said Dr. Graham Taylor, a clinician and professor at Imperial College London.
Most of the infected adults are members of the indigenous community in Australia.

The mummy’s curse.
So why has nobody yet planned to bring these “refugees” to the U.S. for treatment?
Do they not call them aboriginal people or aborigines any longer?
Was Bill Gates recently in the area promoting his “Vaccinations for reducing world population by 90%” again?
Eating your ancestors to grant them vicarious lives and to gain their powers?
Although an interesting and informative article regarding this virus and its impact, it never once address HOW the virus came from the mummy to the people—which is the expectation of how its worded. If they meant how it spread to each other or that it has spread is another. But they never get from mummy to how it was transmitted and even acquired in present day.
Yup, that’s me mum...
Its been a while since the AIDS virus was called HTLV-III. Longer still since AIDS was called GRID.
aarghh. Don’t give them any ideas!
Is it me or did the title just change on this? I read several times and double checked and it was titled (paraphrase) How this disease spread from the mummy to the people (basically.) I checked and checked. Then I posted and checked again and the title is nothing like that. Either my head is still foggy from being sick or the title changed. :)

When Juanita was displayed at the National Geographic Society in Washington in 1996, President Bill Clinton joked that she was so attractive, "If I were a single man, I might ask that mummy out."
So 1500 years ago somebody had sex with the mummy to be in the Andes and then made their way to the remote Australian region and had promiscuous sex with the aborigines?
Maybe it should have read:
...A Virus Called HTLV-1 which infects 40 Percent of Adults In Rural Australia is also be found in 1500-Year-Old South American Mummies
I also found it curious how they can’t figure out how a sexually transmitted disease got so prevalent. UH DUUUUH. This is also how the AIDs virus spread. When it involves sex as the way to transmit—like anything, it spreads like wild fire across countries and nations. Now if it was transmitted through reading books—not so much. The there might be questions.
A disease that’s related to HIV and they claim they don’t know what causes it. Gee, I could hazard a guess.
Yeah. You got me. Who had sex with the mummy?
That cinches it.
Aborigines should not have sex with Andean mummies.
