West Valley, Utah (CNN) Mitt Romney did not win the Utah Republican Party's nomination on Saturday, meaning he must compete in a June primary election as he seeks to replace retiring US Sen. Orrin Hatch.
After a wild and raucous day of voting at the Utah GOP convention, the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee was unable to win the 60% that he needed to head to the November ballot unopposed. When none of the 12 candidates were able to cross that threshold, the party continued with successive rounds of caucus voting until one candidate reached 40%.
On the second round of voting, Utah state representative Mike Kennedy emerged in the lead with 50.88%. Romney came in a close second with 49.12%.
Romney and Kennedy will now compete in a primary set for June 26.

One last chance to avoid Senator Windsock.
Romney is the quintessential Bush League Republican, campaigning as a conservative, acting like a Democrat once elected.
I know, but it is UT, and they like their bishops there.
If Utah Republican voters select Dr. Kennedy, you can expect the state GOP openly campaign for Dem candidate, then.
That is an established fact.
I think he probably preferred the primary.
Bush League Republicans always help the Democrat if their guy does not get nominated.
Whatever it takes to block the citizens from keeping their country and the rule of law.
I have seen articles like this CNN article elsewhere. NOT ONE OF THEM I saw had the headline: Romney Only Manages 2nd Place in Utah Primary.
Instead, the typical headline, including this one, imply that he just fell short of grasping the nomination outright.
That’s just my observation.
I thought he lived in Massachusetts?? Why is he in Utah and why did they allow him to visit in the first place??
He’s a mormon. A BAD mormon, but still...
His only motivation for the position is to help destroy Trump so that he can run against him in 2020. Only anti/never Trumper Rinos vote for him in Utah.
So Romulus wasn’t anointed.
Good. Make him earn it...if he can.
I supported him when he ran in 2012. But I despise Mitt today. Hope he gets defeated in the Utah Primary.
He hates Trump and has made that known 100 times too many to the media.
HEAR! HEAR!
About freaking time!
My Morman neighbors do not like him. AAAAAHHH! the beauty of private voting!!!!
His funniest remark speaking to the convention was about “repealing Obamacare”.
This from the guy who came up with the original Obamacare called Romneycare in Massachusetts.
He lives in CA. Has a beautiful ocean view. Elevator for his car.
He only lived in MA to get elected Gov. after he failed to get elected Senator by running to the left of Ted Kennedy.
He claims to have moved to Utah recently, although he has owned property there as well as other places for years.
Maybe he can try Michigan next time.
Oh sure, he would rather spent millions fighting a primary than being anointed by the GOP......./S
thus, he almost certainly preferred the primary all along. it was by far his easiest path to success, and campaigning is what he does.
sorry I confused you.
