I'm trying to clean up all the news tapes I've put up, so I've made a new Gulf War 1991 Playlist. This is the first of over 20 hours of tape we recently found and encoded from those early days, added to the ones already up.
The tapes were unorganized and unlabeled, so they aren't in a good order, but I'm adding info to the titles and, when they're all up, I'll number the tapes to make it easier. In the meantime, I'm putting up a quick and dirty webpage to help you make your way through the tapes. The second half of this tape was blocked because it showed the Israeli news conference with Netanyahu, where everyone was wearing gas masks through the whole thing. Sigh.
I just finished Norman Schwartzkopf’s autobiography.
One thing I had forgotten was just how effective our Air Force was in the Gulf War. They had really degraded Saddam’s military before the ground war began.
um ... that was COMBINED air forces. USAF, US Navy, USMC.
OORAH!
Now that you mention it, the British were given one of the toughest assignments. Cratering runways.
Also other countries’ Air Forces too but the main one was the U.S. Air Force. Nearly all the air to air victories were scored by one outfit. The Nomads of Eglin AFB.
I was in the Army at the time, waiting for my unit to be mobilized for OD Shield/Storm.
Luckily, Stormin’ Norman and his SHOCK AND AWE made it so that my unit wasn’t called...though we were later for Iraq.
My then-husband was a (Supply) Warrant Officer. When we got the news, we just hugged one another; didn’t have to say a word knowing it would be a good two years before our life was back to, ‘normal’ - though it never was.
Nobody prays for peace like those of us in the military - but we also know what has to be done. ;)
And F-111Fs out of Lakenheath, England killed more Iraqi tanks than A-10s did.
On day two of the air war CNN showed a clip of an F-18 with my name on the side taxiing out to the runway. I wasn’t the pilot as I had flown the night before but my folks got a lot of phone calls that day. Was never able to find the footage.
There’s a lot of CNN footage here. I take out commercials and extraneous news and spouse support groups, but I would never take out any pilot footage. So, maybe, ...
It would have been from Jan 18/19/20, I think.
That is interesting.
I would never have guessed that.
They had the best aircraft for those missions - low, slow, observable, rugged.
Did yo know a call sign Z-man?
I know more than one!
last name Zimmerman, first two initials R,R
Yup. He and I flew a few years later (@1995) when I refreshed in the Hornet.
