Cambridge Analytica Whistleblower: Facebook Able to Listen to You at Home and Work

Cambridge Analytica whistleblower Christoper Wylie, appearing before a committee of British MPs on Tuesday, said that Facebook has the ability to spy on users in their homes and offices.

The British parliament is investigating Cambridge Analytica's involvement in the Brexit election. MP Damian Collins, who chaired the committee, asked Wyle whether Facebook has the ability to listen to what people are talking about in order to better target them with ads.

"There's been various speculation about the fact that Facebook can, through the Facebook app on your smartphone, listen in to what people are talking about and discussing and using that to prioritize the advertising as well," Collins said. "Other people would say, no, they don't think it's possible. It's just that the Facebook system is just so good at predicting what you're interested in that it can guess." He asked for Wylie's thoughts on the possibility.

"Facebook must be Santa Claus!

It sees you when you're sleeping, It knows when you're awake It set you up to be data-mined And it knows just what to take!"

So I went someplace and saw what looked like a fun card game, Exploding Kittens. I picked it up and read the box. Said nothing to nobody and put it down.

I came home and told my partner about it, just once, verbally.

Ads for Exploding Kittens come up on my computer.

Frankly, as a game, Exploding Kittens is mediocre. The artist and his work is why it got all the buzz.

But that is a scary anecdote--even scarier than how my dates from a internet dating site ended up as Friend suggestions--even though I use different e-mail accounts for Facebook and that site.

My brother had a one-night stand from out-of-town show up on his Facebook Friend suggestions.

One of my sons figured this out a year or two ago. He had been sitting at his dining room room table with his laptop open. His father in law sat down and they had a discussion about steel buildings. My son never sent any emails about them and never searched for them online. Shortly thereafter, ads about steel building started showing up.

I was skeptical that this could be happening, but when I did a search, there were lots of reports from other people about it.

This isn’t new. It’s been reported that Smart TVs can do the same thing.

Interesting.

I wonder if your smartphone somehow picked up the bar code on the package.

I don’t have a smartphone! I have a flip and when it’s in my pocket the camera is blind. My partner has a smartphone, not Apple, without a FB app.

Could be the GPS log “knew” what games were there or something was listening like Amazon Echo listens.

Exactly the kind of thing that has happened to me as well.

Forget Alexa. Your iPhone is recording everything, always, for any app you have downloaded....

"...dating websites and Facebook..."

Not only that...one can use both a different email and different pics that do not appear on FB...yet still sends those singles as Friend suggestions.

Another reason why fakebook is banned on all devices in my home. Blocked by IP address at the router.
