No president has been in a weaker political position in Washington since Richard Nixon in 1974.
He likely did what he did today in order to stay relevant, and in the game. His own party would have crucified him had he caused a shut-down in a mid-term year (the professional political class is all about themselves...and nothing else). The votes were there to impeach and convict, they dont need a reason at all, had the powers-that -be felt their existence at the trough was threatened by his action...well, itd be Trump saying et tu, Brute.
He lives to fight another day on a different battlefield. Like at Dunkirk...by the way, this isnt a movie, the ending here can be defeat, it can be failure, it can be very, very bad. Nothing is assured. I suggest redoubling the effort.
Up until today nobody could have pulled off impeaching Trump because there would be a mass road trip to DC the likes of which the US capitol has never seen before. But today Trump pissed off that base that would have fought for him. Those that want him impeached got a victory....at least for today. Sentiment t might change tomorrow.
Because Rep Todd Rokita R voted against this bill several people have thrown their support behind him instead of one of the other people running on R ticket for Senate (on his FB page. )
A way of sorting goats from sheep ?

I don’t think this is the point at all.
The President simply considered it IMPERATIVE to get the military healthy again—BECAUSE IT MAY STOP A WAR...OR FIGHT A WAR ... in the very near future.
I think with the military taken care of, we will soon see indictments start, see the Iran thing killed, see some genuine push-back against China in the South China Sea ... and of course see NorK nuclear program taken out.
The military fix was simply ESSENTIAL—and NOW, not LATER.
There is no doubt the President intends to play hardball against enemies domestic and foreign ... but he had to get bullets in the guns (literally).
How does this budget bill and possible gov’t shutdown differ from the one last year, where the gov’t shut down over a weekend ?
