Picture this: thanks to a combination of diplomatic ingenuity, unique personalities and a historic willingness to see tensions in Northeast Asia disappear, President Donald J. Trump convinces North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un to do the unthinkable and give up his nuclear weapons.
While we are a long way from even a meeting between the two taking place, let alone the ending of Kims nuclear weapons program, we can stargaze a little. If the Trump administration can somehow land the ultimate of deals, the geopolitical map would instantly be reset. Americas security, and that of its allies in Asia, would be enhanced dramatically, ridding our planet of one of its greatest security risks. Not only would President Trump deserve the Nobel Prize, but his place in history would be secureforever.
And nothing would terrify China more. The reason, if you think about it, is obvious. The instability that Pyongyang brings to U.S. foreign policy presents to China a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to achieve many of its goals throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Remove the North Korea crisis from Asia and Washington has the economic, diplomatic, political and, most of all, military bandwidth to contain Beijings aspirations across Asiaand indeed, around the world.
To be clear, China has benefitted in the past from America having its diplomatic focus elsewhere. Just months before September 11, in April 2001, Washington and Beijing saw tensions spike after Chinese fighter pilots damaged a U.S. intelligence plane flying in international airspace. The so-called Hainan Island Incident caused Washington to begin to rethink its relations with Beijing, at least for a time. But after the towers fell on September 11 and America went to war against terror around the world, China was able to build its economic and military muscle while the world was focused on events elsewhere.

Communism will always try to play us to our detriment. China, Cuba, Venezuela and N. Korea all want our collapse.
North Korea is nothing compared to the idiotic military campaigns the U.S. has been waging in the Middle East and Afghanistan for decades. Pacifying North Korea isn't going to do anything to improve America's broken military and foreign policy.
50% poor analysis. If the NK nuclear/ missile threat goes away, Japan will have far less impetus to rearm.
Couldn’t agree more.
Much of the Chinese military modernization is directed at containing a possible threat from Japan.
The Chinese have never forgotten the brutality of the Japanese occupation during World War II.
China would prefer a strong US presence on the Korean peninsula both as a stabilizing factor and to deter possible Russian moves against China.
Getting rid of NK’s nukes also makes China a guarantor of NK’s survival.
If it unfolds that way, its a win for Beijing and Presidents Trump and Xi have good relations.
The author is an uninformed moron. China has already facilitated the first meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un in the Forbidden City last November. China made Xi President for life so he could guarantee that the Kim family could be assured of protection.
We are all going to be saying peace and security very soon!
//// The author is a moron. ////
Seems harsh, but accurate. This article shows little understanding of the military situation, and less than that for the geo-economic situation. If North and South cooperated in economic ventures, or ever unified in one economic zone or reunited politically, they would become an economic power. Hyundais and Kias, are current examples of Korean manufacturing, but if the North could actually contribute to the battle, they would produce a lot of stuff in direct competition with (Red) China.
No, China’s worst nightmare is a nuclear armed Japan.
Use this article to define ‘stupid.’
“Donald J. Trump convinces North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un to do the unthinkable and give up his nuclear weapons. “
Really ? How many nuclear weapons does NK have ? Aren’t we really talking about Kim giving up the pursuit of nuclear weapons ?
“China made Xi President for life so he could guarantee that the Kim family could be assured of protection.”
Whoa, what ?
Think about it. After Saddam Hussein and Qaddafi, who would trust the United States to guarantee a deal if you were a hereditary dictator? Expand your thinking!
Umm... Have you been living under a rock the last few years? The Norks have been routinely successfully detonating nuclear weapons for years now. We believe that have about 50.
The NORKS are nominally China’s pawns.
I’m believing that Kim is playing a part in a game that was contingent on Hillary winning. She didn’t win (who knows what REAL collusion with the ChiComs she may have had in store had she won ... they’re Clinton corruption buddys going back to hubby’s Administration) but he went ahead anyway.
Trump isn’t playing the game that was very possibly prearranged with Clinton.
I’m not saying that Clinton would have given the whole peninsula away but all these unification overtures with the South at the Olympics took some doing. There has to be a reason for them.
Actually, I think that artificial island and China’s territorial waters claims may be closer to the mark for what Clinton was to give them for some “victory” in Korea.
Though I’m not sure she’d have stood by while they marched into Taiwan. At least not without hundreds of millions of dollars swung the Clinton’s way.
This is ridiculous. If the two Koreas unite, why would that be bad for China? Why not think a little out of the box on what is good for each country? Having this wack job with nuclear weapons is not good for any body.
It's pretty safe under this rock.
The Norks have been routinely successfully detonating nuclear weapons for years now.
So they claim. Although the 'experts' say that they don't even know what kind of nuclear bomb they are.
We believe that have about 50.
Where did 'we' get that information from ?
P.S. Why is it, after these YEARS of testing NUCLEAR BOMBS in North Korea, no one has detected any radiation emanating from these tests ? There have been no reports of any effects of radiation on the populace of NK.
That’s because they’re not dropping them on population centers. Wait 30 years, and MAYBE the Norks will start coming down with a slightly elevated rate of pancreatic cancer or thyroid cancer. (But nuclear radiation doesn’t do what people think. The people from the suburbs of Hiroshima and Priyapat have LOWER rates of cancer than normal.)
How many ‘nukes’ would you estimate the US set off in the US ?
