President Trump on Tuesday signaled an openness to modest gun-control measures following what he called an evil massacre at a South Florida high school last week that left 17 dead and prompted passionate calls from teenagers for reform.
Trump directed the Justice Department to draft a ban on devices known as bump stocks, molded pieces of plastic or metal that can attach to a legal semiautomatic gun and allow it to fire up to 100 rounds in seven seconds, similar to an illegal machine gun.
In private, he has indicated that he might do more, telling advisers and friends in recent days that he is determined to push for some sort of gun-control legislation, according to people familiar with the conversations.
In one such discussion, during dinner with television commentator Geraldo Rivera at Trumps Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, the president listened with interest as Rivera suggested raising the minimum age at which a person could buy a semiautomatic weapon from 18 to 21. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Tuesday that the idea is on the table for us to discuss.
So far, Trumps public stances have not crossed the agenda of the powerful pro-gun-rights National Rifle Association, which endorsed him during the 2016 Republican primary and spent more than $30 million supporting his candidacy and attacking his opponent in the general election, Hillary Clinton. But behind the scenes, Trump is floating ideas that could put him at odds with the NRA.
The NRA did not respond Tuesday to a request for comment.
Trumps attempt at a new tone on the gun issue comes as the politics surrounding the issue appear to be changing in the wake of the shooting last week in Parkland, Fla.

Sanders said Tuesday that increasing the minimum age for purchasing a semiautomatic weapon is certainly something thats on the table for us to discuss and that we expect to come up over the next couple of weeks.
Now this is the Washington Post and their anonymous sources, but I think it's important to put out there. I think people here would probably feel strongly about the content of this article and the issues raised.
Evidently, Javanka didn’t mention the 10th Amendment in their latest memo to POTUS.
Trump is a brilliant strategist folks. He’s throwing cold water on all over the Left’s anti-gun kooks. And this memo? It’s just that...it’s not the law and Trump will never sign a gun control bill even if it miraculously passes the House.
Our side needs to start protesting in front of pharmaceutical companies that make the drugs a lot of these kids are on.
Can’t give the democrats any issue to rally their base for the midterms.
Bump stock? Never heard of it. Won’t miss it.
Agreed. I don’t care about the bump stocks at all. What do you think of raising the age from 18 to 21, though?
Yes, protesting pharmaceutical companies might help shift blame. But the big problem is that people think conspiracy theories are crazy, even when they are staring them in the face.
The Compost is in full propaganda mode. This is purely designed to detach the President’s base from him.
already sent an email firmly opposing the President on this.
bad mistake on his part.
Advance the liberal agenda, Mr. Trump, and I will be more than happy to sit out 2018 and let them deal with you.
I have no need, want or use for anyone pushing meaningless laws and attacking my civil rights for something I didn’t do.
If that’s what you want to do, you can do it without me.
Consider it a warning, only going to say it once.
I dont get it. He can never go far enough for the gun grabbers. Anything he does that is less than full confiscation will not be valued or appreciated by the left and it just pisses off the right. I don’t get the benefit for doing a “little gun control”.
If he does anything of the sort, that is exactly what will happen.
Hopefully he does not, because it would be a YUGE mistake.
Florida voted two to one today to not ban ARs.
Ive read the memo. It it very carefully-worded and does not call for banning bump stocks. It instructs the AG to propose a rule banning all devices that turn legal weapons into machineguns.
As the memo acknowledges, the ATF under Obama already determined that bump stocks do no such thing.
I dont like this memoI think the NFA and Gun Control Act should be repealed and that the right to own a machine gun is protected by the Second Amendmentbut it is not quite what the headlines suggest.
Whatever they do to gun ownership, do likewise to voting rights. Need to be 21? Okay. Need to have positive ID. Ok. IF they are both Rights, treat them equally.
The deep state fantasies and saying that these massacres are staged is going to alienate even those mostly likely to agree with our policies and hand the country to the democrats in 2018. But my problem with your post isn’t that it’s not good tactics. It’s that it’s not true, and although in some unknowable way it gives you some kind of unknowable relief from some kind of unknowable inner pain to channel your anger into your fantasy I think you also know that it isn’t true. I can only imagine the kind of pain the tension between what you know and what you want to believe is causing you.
Like it or not, the Left had their entire playbook teed up and ready to go at the next shooting - and our side never had a chance.
The bottom line is that Trump needs to give a bit, or we get WIPED OUT in November. I just hope he doesn’t go too far, or at least that the Republicans in the House stop him.
Nearly every mass killing has mental illness, drugs, or Islam involved. Deal with that!
There will be no gun control legislation signed into law. They wrote a memo about bump stocks. That’s it. Now the Washington Post is happy.
One is a G-d given natural right enumerated by the 2nd Amendment...the other(voting) not a constitutional right at all.
