Blackness invites speculation. The very idea of a global African diaspora creates the most fertile of grounds for a field of what-ifs. What if European enslavers and colonizers had never ventured into the African continent? More intriguing yet: What if African nations and peoples had successfully rebuffed generations of plunder and theft? What if the Zulu had won the wars against the Voortrekkers and the British, and a confederation of Bantu people had risen up and smashed Belgian rule? What if the Transatlantic children of the mother continent had been allowed to remain, building their empires with the bounties of the cradle of civilization?
These are the questions that vibrate beneath the vibranium bedrock of Marvels Black Panther, due out in theaters this week. The basic premise of a superpowered king fighting crime in a futuristic feline-themed suit is the kind of fresh-off-the-panel action absurdity that marks todays comic-book movies. But, on a deeper level, the fictional African nation of Wakanda is the same Atlantean archetype that has always haunted this diaspora. And like all variations on that archetypal story, Black Panther is a fantasy about black power.

I will laugh if this movie turns in to a flop...................
What if people had ignored Karl Marx? There would be 100 million more of em.
I’m sick of hearing about it already. I do hope it does worse than the fantastical predictions. White people may be confused about whether they are allowed to see it or not - can they make money just on black people?
What if black fathers had stuck around past the time it too to put their pants on?
Sub-Saharan Africa had contact with many of the Mediterranean and Near East Civilizations. Nubia and modern day Ethiopia in the lower Nile had contacts with Classical Egypt. Caravans brought slaves, ivory, and exotic animals for the games through the Sahara to Rome. The same trade happened when the Arabs conquered North Africa. Europeans were in contact with West Africa starting with the Portuguese centuries before the carving up of Africa during the last quarter of the 19th century. Despite all these contact lasting millennia Africa was still a ****hole.
As long as moviegoers realize it is a comic book world of fiction and nothing is real then should just be another fantasy flick.
Had Africa remained untouched by the civilized* world, would it have become self-civilized? Would the wheel, roads, power sources and technology flourished eventually?
*The so-called civilized world was no bargain either, and much of it still is not.
I get a big kick about all the white liberals loudly virtue signalling each other as to how they are going to let black people enjoy the movie the first week all to themselves without having to be bothered by the presence of white people in the audience.
In fact, I’ve become so woke, I’ve decided to never see it.
What if a black country in Africa had great knowledge, but decided to let the rest of the continent devolve into a tribalistic cesspool instead of helping it’s neighbors?
That’s the liberal elite way, the gated community written large. It’s narcissism and elitism carried to it’s evolutionary conclusion. “Hellstrom’s Hive”... and “White Plague”, two of Frank Herberts prescient novels of possible futures.
The first one to mention race is the racist.
Of course it would have self-civilized — Just look at how well the Hutus and Tutsis were getting along before the Evil White People got involved. Oh, wait...
What if . . . liberals had brains?
What if no European slavers removed Africans from the continent of Africa, they ask. Then every black person in the world would be living in squalor in Africa today.
What is the out-of-wedlock birthrate in Wakanda?
“Had Africa remained untouched by the civilized* world, would it have become self-civilized? Would the wheel, roads, power sources and technology flourished eventually?”

Ask Peace Corps volunteers your question. You can build the village a latrine but you can’t make the villagers use it. They’d rather be free-range squatters to deposit the goods between their Air Jordans. Go figure.
“In fact, Ive become so woke, Ive decided to never see i”
I think you should see it with a large group of freinds. You should sit in the back row and talk loudly during the entire movie
Movie hype dressed up as political commentary.
They’d all be dead or dying of HIV/AIDS and related ailments
