Research shows a link, but it isnt retirement itself that leads to a longer life, but what you do in retirement.
You may not need another reason to retire early, but Ill give you one anyway: It could lengthen your life.
Thats the thrust from various research in recent years, and also from a 2017 study in the journal Health Economics.
In that study, Hans Bloemen, Stefan Hochguertel and Jochem Zweerink all economists from the Netherlands looked at what happened when, in 2005, some Dutch civil servants could temporarily qualify for early retirement.
Only those at least 55 years old and with at least 10 years of continuous service with contributions to the public sector pension fund were eligible. Men responding to the early retirement offer were 2.6 percentage points less likely to die over the next five years than those who did not retire early. (Too few women met the early retirement eligibility criteria to be included in the study.)
The Dutch study echoes those from other countries. An analysis in the United States found about seven years of retirement can be as good for health as reducing the chance of getting a serious disease (like diabetes or heart conditions) by 20 percent. Positive health effects of retirement have also been found by studies using data from Israel, England, Germany and other European countries.
That retirement promotes health and prolongs life isnt obvious. After all, work provides income and, for some, health insurance both helpful for maintenance of well-being. It also can provide purpose and camaraderie. Evidence is mounting that loneliness and social isolation are linked to illness, cognitive decline and death. One study of American retirees found them less likely to be lonely or depressed.

Glad you liked it. :)
I’ve always been partial to “Poor Wayfaring Stranger” myself, “I’m going there to see my Savior, Who shed for me His precious blood.”
Never heard it in Sacred Harp, though. I’ll have to see if it’s on Youtube.
Mine is “Mansion on a Hilltop”
Every time we sing it in church I believe I can hear my wife singing right along with me . . . ah, sweet memories!
I’ve just embarked on a second “career”, taking early retirement from a great company, and going to another great place. Getting a new salary, taking the “reduced” payout from my old-fashioned pension, my wife retiring, staying home, and doing the same, has financially worked out great so far.
The combination of my former company’s reputation, my background experience, and my gray hair have given me a good head-start on the “perceived wisdom” scale. It’s great to have people listen to what I have to say again.
I’m not sure how it would pan out if I didn’t have a job to go to... My wife and I might be at each other’s throats!
“I want to return to Africa as a missionary.”
GOOD FOR YOU!
God Bless.
I’m sorry for your loss. Some years back I almost lost mine, but God and some fine doctors, kept her with me. So I have a small idea of where you were and are. God bless you. I know she’s waiting for yo.
God bless!
God bless!
Wife and I retired 13 yrs ago at 57 yoa.Sometimes it seems there isn’t enough time in the day.Major perk is flying cheapest fares in middle of week.
I used to work with young Airmen at a USAF base just south of Canada. A kid actually asked a question like that once. So I made it a point to tell them the Canadians have 10 hour days with 100 minutes to the hour etc etc. Some of them actually bought it.
My favorite was a picture on a wall of a tanker refueling a B52 that had the fuel pipe going from the back of the tanker to the B52. I told them that was a tow bar because the B52’s were such pigs they had trouble flying with a full load.
We’d watch B52’s take off, and they’d put out huge black clouds of smoke. I told the kids that each engine was connected to a set of wheels, the pilot revved up each engine, dumped all the clutches, and the tires squealing caused all the smoke.
The Movie “ Cold Mountain” has that song.
Plenty of other Great Music!
Yes, but there are many other recording of this song and many others on youtube. Just search “Sacred Heart”
I would hope you would will understand that I encourage and will continue to encourage all to appreciate God’s gift to us and give thanks for it.
Thanks...
Will try That.
Love it. Some people see that as “mean”, but I’ve always thought it was a good way to demonstrate to youngsters that they always have to think for themselves, as opposed to just believing what they are told.
Oh, that the youngsters in school now could be taught that...
Have a great weekend, and thanks for your service.
Let me know how you like them. sacred Heart seems to be something of an acquired taste for many people. :)
The Point is that in Heaven
“The Redeemed “ will sing...
Angels can’t.
