Bono has said that music has gotten very girly in recent years, with hip-hop serving as the only place for young male anger at the moment.
The U2 frontman voiced the opinion during a new interview, with the 57-year-old lamenting the lack of young male anger in rock music in 2017.
LOL, U2 went girly after Sunday bloody Sunday... what, about 1984?
Another musician philosopher
Yeah, that’s why I love Metallica.
“Now your messin with a son-of-a-bitch.” Not.
Joshua Tree was okay. But other than that I agree with you.
On the other hand, the "rage" he longs for is just infantile. Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain were not manly. They were neglected infants wailing from their cribs.
Rock and roll does NOT have to be angry. That's just total nonsense. Actually, in the early days, rock and roll was about WINNING, not about angst.

He should know. He sounds like a dying bird whenever he sings.
Got fithy rich.
The rage went away
All the Europeon non girlys died in WW2.
Seems like it anyway.
There were good songs on “Achtung Baby.” I was listening to that CD just the other day.
Bono is still an annoying person, though.
Joshua tree was soft music, not rock and roll. To each his own, but for Bono to criticize the softening of music is hilarious. He was part of that movement that wanted MASS appeal over musical quality.
I saw U2 in 1983 and in 2000. In the latter concert, people were clearly only interested in their earliest music.
Truth is, I’m 50 now, and heavy metal, hardcore, metalcore, punk rock could not be MORE alive than it is now. Music is amazing for so many hard rock styles. I go to concerts frequently and support the artists too.
Sorry Bono. Great rock and roll doesnt have to emphasize anger. I dont recall a lot of anger in The Beatles - mostly peace and love - or in the California Surf sound - mostly cars and girls.
Muse is a good rock band, but I tend to get tired of Matt Bellamy’s singing voice pretty quickly.
There is no doubt U2 made some great music.
But I would NOT describe their music as rage.
If anything, it is soft “girly” rock.
I don’t know anything about newer music, but when I hear it in passing, it seems insipid and vapid. But that’s probably how my parents felt when I was listening to Motown, Disco, etc.
Bono’s music has. Also crappy. He should maybe listen to some Black Sabbath, toughen up.
IMO, the guitar has gone the way of the clarinet, and will not come back from it. It’s played out. Some various forms of retro music may survive, but as a vibrant source of anything new? Ain’t gonna happen. All things come to an end at some point.
