Whether a government shutdown is on the horizon for the holiday season, a majority of federal employees who took an anonymous online survey from Federal News Radio said their federal agencies are ready if a shutdown does happen.
Congress has until midnight on Friday, Dec. 22 to avoid a government shutdown. To do that, the House and Senate must pass either another stopgap continuing resolution or approve an omnibus spending plan, which came closer to reality on Tuesday, when President Donald Trump signed a bill authorizing more than $700 billion in defense spending for the rest of fiscal 2018.
The House is set to vote next week on a plan from Appropriations Committee Chairman Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.) that would place federal civilian agencies on another continuing resolution until Jan. 19, 2018. On Wednesday, Frelinghuysen urged his colleagues to use this borrowed time to pass a comprehensive budget plan.
This CR is not the preferred way to do the nations fiscal business. It is vital that all 12 appropriations bills be negotiated with the Senate and signed into law, he said. However, this resolution will allow time for the leadership of the House and Senate and the White House to come to agreement on a topline spending level for this fiscal year. Once this agreement is made, my Committee will promptly go to work with the Senate to complete the final legislation.
I must be nice to get an extended Christmas vacation.
They will also get paid for it.
The choice will be between using their sick or vacation time.
Unless they are required to work, then the get double time off some other time.
Is ANY money saved by a government shutdown?
Good opportunity to find out the non-essentials, IMO
shut er down, who would notice?
Worthless federal gub mint is mostly a waste.
Trump needs to start pink slipping government workers during shutdowns
This has become a big game with no consequences for the Democrats and a paid vacation for federal workers.
Cut loose a few of the legion of deadwood in Washington during the shut down and government workers will be protesting day and night
A shutdown will be much different without Obama in there to inflict maximum pain. Trump will do the opposite and most may not even notice a difference. Only the screaming media and left ... same thing... will be there to mark the occasion.
How convenient, the timing is perfect. Why don’t those fools shut the government down when it would really do some good? Nothing more than a few extra days off during the holiday period. Tell me again what a good job they do, I’ll wait......
Im wondering if a government shutdown negates a recess which might explain the sudden talk of it for the holidays. An attempt to forestall any Trump cleanup and replacement attempts perhaps?
There is no such thing as a government shutdown.
Fedzilla never sleeps.
NEVER.
Thein RR + Air traffic controllers.
I worked for the federal gov’t for a 3.5 year period, and twice...I sat down and probably wasted (as a manager) probably eighty man-hours (for each) in the various processes and emergency planning episodes for my office and the organization we supported. I tried desperately to list myself as non-essential and thus would be ‘off’. In both cases, that failed, and I was supposed to be there in an un-paid status and performing emergency duties.
By 2013, I had decided enough....this was one of the dozen-odd things that bothered me about working for the federal government. I walked out the front door and did early retirement with my 401k.
As a manager, nothing about the shutdown makes much sense. If they ever saved any money, it’d be quickly quashed and tossed out. I think it ought to be mandatory that once you enter a shutdown, it ought be mandated as a minimum of 30 days of a shut-down, and folks not working should not be paid.
Can anyone tell me when was the last time our government had an actual budget? Iirc, there wasnt one during the entire 8 years of Barry and this CR is now commonplace.
