People judge married couples with different last names

What’s in a name? A lot, according to researchers from the University of Nevada.

Whether a woman takes her husband’s name after marriage or not, people pass judgment on the couple, they found.

The scientists have conducted three studies on this topic to date. In the newest, published in the journal Springer, researchers found that when a woman chooses not to take her husband’s surname after marriage, people perceive her husband as being more feminine and less masculine.

Those same women, on the other hand, are regarded to yield more power and to be more self-focused, ambitious and assertive, according to previous research.

LOL. It’s all good. BTW, my wife uses her maiden name as her middle name. Yea, she was slightly more liberal when we got married. But 5 kids and an unrelenting government has turned her over to our side.

Thank you. Actually; socially she is generally referred to as Mrs. _____. Her professional license is under her maiden name, as are all legal documents.

>> ... often it’s professional people who have degrees in their own name and have established themselves.

That was the case here - we flew for the same airline (and always in the same airplane and in the same seat). Not to mention the confusion of having two of us in the same house would have been a nightmare for the crew desk.

And as for being lefties - we just completed finding a 6 figure scholarship at Hillsdale College that bears BOTH our names.

I kept my name but do use my married name too. I did not do it because of any Liberal political viewpoint.

In my first marriage, I combined my first and middle name into one and my maiden name as my middle name and then my new last name. I said my Dad was proud enough to give me his name; I am proud enough to keep it. My second marriage, I kept my previous married name for awhile in order to have the same as my son. I have changed it most everywhere now.

That’s just a wonderful donation to have given & to a very important resource for conservatism in our country. Inspiring & Well done!

Really? “Whack a do” Would be the only reason? I have a name the one I was Christened with. That is my legal name. I also use Mrs. and my husband’s used in social situations and other times my legal name is not required. I fail to see how that is evidence of “Whack a do.”

Right. I keep the lid down to keep the cats out. Keeping the bathroom door shut works, too, but I do that only when my wife is away.

Thanks.

My first name with my husband’s last name is the same as another woman in this town. Which created some hiccoughs. The oddest one was when code enforcement (I worked for city government at the time) asked my boss if I was also running an unlicensed daycare center. Why yes I have the little darlings stashed under the desk while I do my “official bizness”. They were serious.

I often wonder about actors. They typically keep their names. Kelly rips did but her kids are consuelos. I wonder if outside the show she goes by his last name. I guess after 20 years, they figured it out. They go to mass every week so there’s that.

My wife couldn’t wait to change her name to mine, despite the objections from her mother.

I once fell in love with a woman who was a leader in her professional field. I had decided that if she were willing marry me, I'd agree to let her keep her last name for professional reasons. However, she broke up with me, so it never became an issue.

I'll play. I view them as likely cheaters not committed to their marriage. Why not pick a third last name for their kids and make it really confusing.

Our 40 years puts the lie to your assumption.

congratulations. But statistics never lie. Very few couples make it 20 years, even fewer make it 40 years. This singular data point is insignificant compared to the tens of thousands, if not millions of marriages that have failed.
