This Humvee-Mounted Howitzer Is Here To "Shoot and Scoot"
Popular Mechanics ^ | September 20, 2017 | Kyle Mizokami

Posted on 09/21/2017 6:23:31 AM PDT by C19fan

A new self-propelled howitzer system meets a Humvee—or a Ford F-250 pickup truck—with a 105-millimeter howitzer for an artillery system capable of rapidly moving from one firing position to another. The result is the Hawkeye,a new artillery system that can not only keep up with fast-moving friendly forces but dodge attempts by enemy forces to shut it down.

I like this.

I like this a lot.

Simple, should be relatively cheap and yet it is going to be very effective.

Now our military are using their heads!

Paint it white and you’ll blend right in with the Taliban and Isis with their Toyota Hilux trucks.

The M38 jeep mounted with a 106mm recoilless rifle did something similar back in the 1950’s.

No different in concept than the M3 GMC Motor Carriage--Circa WW2. Except this one had a 75mm gun.

I always liked halftracks for some reason.

What’s old is new again.

I remember the pictures of flying cars they discussed back in the 1960’s, they were to revolutionize our nation. Not there yet. smile.

Thanks for post.

- Great concept, all current 105’s in the toe should go to this configuration.

for maritime protection ....
Lloyds of London needs to buy about 100 of these and deploy them with crews on ships as they transit pirate infested waters. Mount it on top of a container and transfer them between ships as needed. I see your RPG and raise you a 105. Add flir for sighting. The inside of the container would hold a generator, ac, ammo storage, a command station and crew quarters. Drop 1 2,3, or 4 on the deck. Might want to modify it to give a little more depression.

Provide canister rounds for when pirates approach in speed boats or inflatables. That would likely generate some lulz.

Two hints:

Aim the gun over the stern

Dont park with the bow aimed at fence posts

I had a model kit or two.

The later versions with flat fenders appealed to me more.

All 105’s on a HMMWV?
Nooooo.

That eliminates airborne and airmobile applications, as well as a whole host of field deployment situations.

There’s a reason 105’s are towed.

I am reading a book right now talking about amtracs in the Pacific in WWII, and they tried outfitting them with 75 mm guns...it was a disaster initially in trials where a few of them tipped over and a bunch of men were killed, but it turns out they simply couldn’t handle the weight of all the ammo they were carrying...I think they eventually got the issue fixed and used them to good effect in Saipan.

LOL, there was another story about how Admiral Kelly Turner was such a big proponent (hope I am getting this right, that it was Turner) of modernizing the fleet’s inventory of amphibious boats to tracked vessels that could go right up on the beach, but the early versions were prone to frequent mechanical failure and money was short so he met a lot of resistance. Apparently, he was such an advocate that he attempted to use one to ferry Adm. Ernest King to the shore from a battleship (anchored near Hawaii I believe, possibly right before the war or early in it)

King wasn’t a fan at all of the tracked vehicles, and if you know anything about Ernest King, it is easy to imagine him being completely abusive, sarcastic and abrasive in his criticism of the things, while Kelly Turner was eager and evangelistic.

Anyway, he convinced King to let one of the vehicles bring him ashore, and King was attired in dress whites with the high collar for some event) and the vehicle apparently got stuck or broken down short of reaching the beach, and as the vehicle tried to get going, King (who was late, and hated the things to begin with) got madder and madder, finally jumping over the side in his dress whites and wading to shore!
