I've seen at least one documentary (Science Channel,most likely) that said that Yellowstone is nothing less than a huge caldera that has,in the distant past,erupted in a way that affected much of North America.It was also claimed that it's not a matter of if,but *when*,that very same thing will happen again.

Archeological digs and studies found ash as deep as 4 feet in the area of North Carolina from the last Yellowstone Super Volcano eruption about 640,000 years ago. So..we are due. And it will be a killer. The US is screwed when it happens.
