I've been using Samsung Pay on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and I really like it. No real issues until just a couple of days ago when I tried to use it at a Publix store. It didn't work even though I held the phone right over the same spot of the card reader that I normally do. I tried it again and again it didn't work so I ended up pulling out my Debit card and used that.
Okay, I figured that maybe there was something wrong with that particular card reader. However, this morning I went to a different Publix store and attempted to use my Samsung Pay again. Again the same problem and again I tried it a second time and again it didn't work so again I ended up having to pull out my card and using that.
Is anyone else having problems using Samsung Pay at Publix stores? Remember, it has to be a report for the past couple of days because before that it worked fine.
Is that security dependent on the security you set for opening your phone (I’m just using a 4 digit code)? Or is there additional security within the Samsung Pay app?
Asking because I have an S8 and the program, but I’ve always been a bit suspicious of bringing the charge process into the phone.
Yesterday, you couldn’t use this system or even a credit card north of San Francisco from about 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Their internet card/phone reading system was down.
That was the first thing I disabled when I got my S8. It’s not that I’m naturally distrusting (I am), I’m just worried about losing the phone and someone buying Jack Ma out with the Samsung Pay.
The only way someone could use that phone after you use it is if they cut your thumb off to scan.

I just got my S8+ yesterday (finally upgraded from my old S5).
Is this Samsung Pay something I have to somehow disable even though I haven't set it up? (have no plans to use it)

If you don’t use it, then no need to disable it however, the security is HIGHER than for your physical card. Read up on it online. That is what convinced me to use Samsung Pay. Also I don’t like having to reach back for my wallet to use a physical credit card. Sometimes stuff falls out that way.

I don’t use thumb scan or pin numbers or swipe entry. I tap the On button and I’m good to go. I just don’t put anything on my phone that can be mis-used by a thief or anybody else...no saved passwords, no account numbers, etc. There are links to account log-ins...but that’s all they get. I’ve even removed a lot of the bloatware. Would it be a nuisance if it got gone? Yep. But a quick call to Version shuts it down.
Nothing new about this, just crappy device readers. What's worse is that these ones didn't even last a full two years. And since all it takes to fix the issue is for the customer to pull out the appropriate card they already have with them, likely won't be fixed.
Just an observation, I’m behind the times.
I don’t know what Samsung pay is, or why you would want to pay using a bar code is it, I assume, from a cellular phone.
I don’t know what bloatware is. From the context I figure it’s undesirable to have bloatware. But I don’t know what it is.
Just saying, in my opinion, technology keeps changing, and it’s hard for me to keep up with all the changes.
I didn’t take any chances...just disabled it.
Think of it this way: if you lose your wallet it is a lot easier for someone to use your credit cards than if you lose your cell phone with Samsung Pay.
I'll stick with my good old credit card, just as easy for me. Besides, I never bother locking my phone since I don't have anything on there really that's a huge issue if the phone's lost/stolen. I never access banking stuff from there, not even email... just web browsing, FaceBook, etc.... real lightweight stuff.
The reason why it is superior security to a physical card is that a hacker can't find out your full card number. You don't even see it when you pull it up on the phone screen because the numbers are blocked out. Therefore all those folks who had their credit cards hacked at Target wouldn't have been hacked if they had used Samsung Pay instead.
“Bloatware” are apps that are placed on your phone by the manufacturer or the service provider that are a) intrusive, b) memory hogs, and/or c) battery drainers. You don’t have to have them on your phone, and many can be uninstalled or disabled without affecting the phone. I’m a novice at this, so I’ve been frugal in removing such apps, but Samsung LOADS your phone up. I’ve seen a list of apps that could be removed on the S8, and it is lengthy.
Memory hogging isn’t a big issue for me as the phone came with a 64 GB internal card...and I just put a 256 GB microSD card in the external card slot.
Intrusive and battery draining is another case.
