Three people were killed when a wrong-way driver going about 100 mph slammed into another vehicle on 101 Freeway in Ventura, officials said Thursday.
Emergency crews responded just after midnight to a collision on the southbound side of the freeway near Seaward Avenue, the Ventura City Fire Department stated in a news release.
Firefighters found two vehicles that were involved in a high-speed head-on collision.
One of the vehicles was hanging from the guard rail on Lemon Grove Bridge as the second vehicle came to a stop on the roadway about 50 yards to the north.
Three adults found inside the two vehicles were all pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Fire Department.
The wrong-way driver was traveling on the center median and then in the fast lane of the 101 Freeway when the collision occurred, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Tom Webster said.
Authorities tracking the vehicle on the northbound side of the freeway recorded the drivers speed at about 100 mph, Webster said.
The victims struck by the wrong-way driver had little chance to avoid the vehicle, said Webster, who offered advice to early morning drivers.
In all practicality its much better in the early morning hours, when drunk drivers are out there to drive in the right-hand lane, Webster said.
Investigators have not said if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
None of the those killed in the crash were immediately identified.
The southbound 101 Freeway was down to one lane for several hours Thursday morning during the investigation.
It doesnt count unless the were livestreaming on Facebook.
Illegals? Up here in WA where I live, US101 is just a two lane road wandering through pine forests.
Drivers training video? “Signal 30” for the 21st Century. Let that be a lesson!
My first thought. Illegal aliens. The identities of the victims were not immediately made known is usually a tipoff.
The 101 in SoCal is a big highway that goes from L.A. county through Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey and beyond. I believe it continues through San Jose and north of the San Francisco Bay area before becoming more of a minor highway.
Yes, 101 is 6 total lanes through Ventura, IIRC... 10 from Mountain View into Palo Alto (2 carpool lanes in each direction since a few yrs ago)... surface street through San Francisco since the progressives there have always maintained their city is too pretty for a freeway to run through it... much rather have gridlock pumping out exhaust 24/7.
I strongly suspect the wrong-way driver to have been an illegal immigrant from south of the border, and drunk. The multilane wrong way accidents here once were very rare and nearly always a confused elderly driver. Not anymore. They’re drunk Mexican illegals now, by far and away. I’m sure California is no different.
Tragic
Put money in illegal or high or both
“I strongly suspect the wrong-way driver to have been an illegal immigrant”
Its the same all over the country now.
I drive this part of the freeway all the time since our marina is right down on Harbor from Seaward. This was between Seaward and 126 which is the route I take all the time. Probably a drunk illegal. Ventura and especially Oxnard has tons of them. If it’s not I’d be surprised.
That will change over the next 20 years.
This is close to where I live(d). I moved 2000 exactly one week ago. I cant hardly tell you all how happy Iam to be out of Southern California.
There are 3 liquor stores around me here. The closest one being a 10 minute drive. Walmart is 3 minutes. I did a google search for liquor stores where I used to live and there are 23 within a 5 mile radius.
Its true that SoCal has a liquor store on every corner. The state makes Billion$ from alcohol related offenses.
Just one Rancho Cucamonga cop was awarded for having THE most DUI arrests in the whole USA in 2016. 481 arrests. In one year. For just one cop.
>>>thats 2000 miles East.
“Drivers training video? Signal 30
The other one was Red Asphalt. We were forced to watch both back in 1976’s HS drivers Ed. Course. Gruesome is an understatement.
Wow. We used to spend a lot of time at the Pierpont Inn right there at Seaward. Lots of crazy drivers on that interstate. I used to call it “the 101 death ride”, and avoided it at all costs. I became an expert on the side streets between Thousand Oaks and Ventura.

I wonder how many of those arrested were totally innocent.
There was a similar cop some years ago in Utah. A female cop had a huge number of DUI arrests. As it turned out, this dirty cop was arresting a number of people whose blood alcohol level was 0.00%.
I remember people passing out and getting sick watching those. Trying to pound some sense into 14-15 year olds

Looks like one of the cars (likely the one that got hit) also had a dog with them, that was also killed :(
