By Crispian Balmer ROME, May 12 (Reuters) The former captain of the Costa Concordia cruise liner was sentenced to 16 years in prison on Friday by Italys highest court for his role in the 2012 shipwreck, which killed 32 people off the Tuscan holiday island of Giglio.
Francesco Schettino was originally found guilty in 2015 of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning his passengers. Fridays ruling marked the end of the appeals process, with the court upholding the initial verdict.
Free during the prolonged legal battles, Schettino, 56, reported to a Rome prison to start his sentence as soon as he was told of the verdict, his lawyer Saverio Senese said.
As always, Italy needs to find a scapegoat, Senese told reporters, adding that his client had waited for word of his fate alone outside the prison gates rather than stay at home with his family in southern Italy.
The Costa Concordia was carrying more than 4,200 passengers and crew, when it hit rocks off Giglio on a chill January night, tearing a hole in its side and eventually keeling over.
Schettino was lambasted by the Italian media and branded Captain Coward for leaving the stricken ship while a chaotic night-time rescue operation was in full flow. Critics accused him of bringing shame to the whole country through his actions.

I wonder how the breaking of the Concordia is progressing. She should be just about down to the keel by now.
One of the all time great radio transmissions “Schettino this is not going to go well for you.” as they tried to get him to go back on the ship.
Two words. 1) Moldovan. 2) hooker.
If during the course of your life you ever see those two words spoken together, run. Nothing good is about to follow.
I have heard similar sentiments in other contexts; however, I don't understand how your observation relates to the Costa Concordia story.

This captain is the living embodiment of all the negative stereotypes about Italy!
Prison? They should send him to the brig! Or maybe Davey Jones’ Locker.
living embodiment of all the negative stereotypes about Italy!...Hey! Hey! Whasamattu? Need a beat Down into your anus?
16 years should impress the babe he was showing around that night. To the victims and families and passengers aboard that night,, nyyyaaaa..
No punishment on this earth will bring back the dead lost by this miserable wretch, but the vision of going from having the rich and beautiful dining at your table to standing in the chow line for slops while worrying about your nights and life span is just a bit of schadenfreude.
seems like a waste of valuable dry dock space to break it this way. I love how they do it at Brownsville: wench the ship up on shore bit by bit, put a dozen guys on hacking it apart into giant pieces with HUGE acetylene torches, drag off the pieces, wench some more and repeat until all gone.
Pretty much the only facilities needed are some slips dug into the dirt, a couple of cranes and some bulldozers.
i like your winches better ...

i’m glad you enjoyed my little joke :)
After he is repeatedly keel hauled.
He can complete his sentence in a nice Mexican prison.
