This is why I don't like tents in bear country. Last time I was camping in the Sierras, a bear woke me up in the middle of the night, digging and snuffling about ten feet away from my tent. Bear or no, I came flying out of that tent like a scalded cat. No way I want one to kill me inside my tent where I'm totally trapped, like a lobster in a lobster trap!

We camped numerous times in Cloudcroft NM. One summer we got to the campground during peak season and it was empty. The previous week a black bear killed a camper in his tent.

We never really worried about it since we always policed the camp, and we had a passel of kids who scared off every bear for miles. The 44 magnum carbine was just for backup.

Fastest tent exit I ever made was when a skunk got into our tent. Thankfully it left after a few minutes and spared us a spray.
