>>as long as the person making the decision is sound of mind, I dont see the harm.<<
I have had some pretty big dust-ups here (up to and including JR telling me to drop it or be banned) about people’s right to end their own life.
My take: The ONE right that every human being has is to end their life if and when they see fit, provided the method of their death does not hurt anyone else.
The State and other busybodies should stay the hell out of any decisions I make with My God.
If we don’t have that basic right then freedom is an illusion.
I watched a good friend suffer horribly for several weeks, yeah he was “alive” technically, but not in any way that really mattered...
In some ways I think modern medicine is at fault, they can keep you “alive” far longer than before, with no real benefit to it... except for everyone to watch him suffer every single day, knowing he WAS going to die anyway.
I am 100% against anyone except the individual or close family make that decision though, my family all know my wishes should something like that happen to me... there is no point simply lying in bed breathing just to lie there and breathe, when all reasonable measures have been used, its time to just go.
You’re a flaming hypocrite.
You and anyone else can easily kill themselves any time without the government or medical profession involved.
What YOU want is suicide to get the government stamp of approval and doctors to act as murderers.
Just man up and do it yourself without involving government, doctors, taxpayers and various medical boards/blah blah.
Bleating about the “State” not getting involved is sheer hypocrisy. You and other pro-death people WANT the gov involved. Why? Makes you feel innocent, virtuous? I have no idea. But you and your ilk are the ones who demand government and doctors be involved in something that should your business and your business ALONE.
You think no one committed suicide before “doctor assisted suicide” got invented?
Get a freaking grip.
If your position is for individual autonomy, then that’s a BIG reason for the suicide laws to remain the way they are in most States: neither legalized nor medicalized nor subsidized.
People who want to kill themselves will always be able to do do. Ten minutes googling will show you 10 swell DIY methods.
But do not involve the medical, legal, or political professions. It will only corrupt them.
The medics are supposed to single mindedly promote your health. Nobody is healthier dead.
The lawyers are supposed to protect your interests .Nobody has any interests when dead.
The politicos are supposed to uphold the American ethic of justice in *res publica*, securing first of all —— first, logically and chronologically -— the inalienable right to life. Nobody has any rights when dead.
By all means, those who want to take their own lives should at least have enough self-respect to do without the entanglements of permission or assistance or consultation with the anointed “compassionate, enlightened and progressive”, kin, insurers, lawyers, legislators, ethicists, “carers” and all that lot.
Do it yourself. Don’t suborn the basic institutions of your society and don’t corrupt everyone around you.
