Yes he was.
Can’t really call this ‘product placement’ as the entire movie featured the Pontiac TransAm. Is there a term for the opposite of ‘product placement’ (pp)? The ‘pp’ in this movie was the Coors! (Beware the dirty minds!)
For the children, yes, it was very true that you could not get Colorado Koolaid aka Coors, east of the Mississippi. Thus it was known to be priority cargo on MATS Airlifts and other such wasted space!
Smokey and the Bandit is one of my all time favorite movies. I don’t understand when people don’t believe it when I tell them that.
Favorites inclulde Unforgiven, Private Ryan, the Big Sleep, the Big Country, All That Jazz, To Live and Die in LA, the Game, Truman Show, Heat, Reservoir Dogs, 12 Monkeys, Shane Se7en, Ronin...
Nobody blinks when I mention any of the above as favorites. Say Smokey and the Bandit and people go into disbelief.
Probably Jackie Gleason’s best work in a lifetime of great work. He steals the show but the chemistry between all the principles is just magic.
That song gets in your head, it stays there.
The only question is, why is it bootlegging to smuggle Coors east of Texas? I never understood that.
I had a 1978 black and gold Trans Am. Not the SE like that, but I loved that car. To this day, the ergonomics of that car was better than any car I have ever owned in my life. Slow car though. 1978 was a bottom for horsepower and being a 400 ci didn’t matter because it was so comically detuned.
Be nice to have one today with a built motor over 500 HP.
DANGIT I loved that car. Really miss it.
And she had to fight for the part because she was just about the opposite of what they had in mind going in. But somehow she stole the part from some eye-candy bimbo, and the rest is history. She brings a reality, vulnerability, and genuine feel to the part that a glitzy big-boobed blonde could not pull off.
In the end, it was the perfect cast.
Easily my favorite line in the movie. I almost wait breathlessly for that scene.
And I’ve heard he ad-libbed that line.
Nice ass.

Why was coors beer illegal east of Texas in the 70s?

Coors chose not to obtain licenses to distribute in states east of the Mississippi due to concerns about competition with other major brewing companies and quality after transportation. Coors had only limited production facilities and insisted on refrigerated shipping and handling. They were trying to insure a quality product. Additionally, there was an agreement between Coors and Miller - Miller would be east of the Mississippi and Coors the west of it. Until the early 80’s when
Right. This is like the Challenger in Vanishing Point. Not merely product placement, the car is a cast member and one of the stars. It has its own personality.
Said in my best Johnny Carson voice..., “I did not know that”.
Thanks for the speedy answer. I really had no clue why Coors was banned east of the Mississippi. Now I know. More government intrusion. That damn interstate commerce law has really put a damper on the USA ever since it was enacted. Bastiges.
