* I broke my rule of posting the entire lead article, come what may. “The Massacre of St. Bartholomew” appears to be a nice history lesson, but the 16th century is out of our jurisdiction and the 20-page article is too long to print, prep and post for a general interest item.

** Republican Hannibal Hamlin elected governor of Maine. Other election news. Updates from Bleeding Kansas and the San Francisco Vigilance Committee. And plenty more.

LOVE THINGS written in the mid-19th century. For literary excellence, they cannot be beat.

Compare how things were written then by a populace that knew and used the English language well with today’s writings.

It shows how far we have fallen, and how dumbed down we are. Our populace is at a 2nd grade level of English compared to then.

So sad.

Forgive my bias - I am an electrical engineer, but I have a degree in English Lit.

If it wasn’t impractical I would post more items from each issue. There are several short fiction stories every month and Harper’s is also serializing Dickens’ Little Dorrit.

The news from Latin America is very interesting. Change a few names and it could have been written yesterday.

A piece on the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre is most apropos for this time in American history. It was the worst event in the French wars of religion and triggered murders throughout France. The siege of La Rochelle began soon after (although it was romantically depicted in The Three Musketeers). Soon, the divisions wracking America at this time will result in an even worse civil war.

I’ve been saying the same thing about Afghanistan and Islamics in general, having read Churchill’s war correspondent histories from the late 1800s.

... like a Western prairie, a vast monotony of flowery flatness ...

Excellent simile!

Many may vote for him who don't usually vote at all.

You're getting too obvious now, Homer.

It’s hard not to conclude that certain parts of the world are caught in eddies of time, never advancing at all, while others just occasionally loop back on themselves, as with bizarre, almost too perfect, confluence of 1856/2016.

My contacts at Harper’s tell me they will publish an article titled “The Fall of Islam” in their January 1857 issue. It should be interesting.

Where did that come from? I should have said December 1856 issue.

I just want to get this off my chest. November 4 - Election Day - was the single biggest posting day I had planned for 1856. So of course it is the day photobucket crashed, reminding me how dependent I am on that out-of-my-control factor. Well, I understand it should be back up tomorrow & I will catch up with the posts.

It just won't be the same, though.
