We just saw the aftermath of a bear attack, so heres a video showing a hunter scaring off a charging bear.
Hunter Franz Albrecht was waiting for a bear to arrive when he got much more than he bargained for. He spots a full-grown sow come running toward the ridge on which hes hunting, when suddenly two small cubs come trotting into the scene. This is about the worst situation for a hunter.
Franz keeps his eye on the bear when it turns on a dime and starts rushing right at him. Instinctively, Franz stands his ground and begins yelling as loud as he can to try and let the bear know hes human. The bear eventually backs down after a tense face-off with Franz and then runs off with her cubs.
Watch this intense video below, and also be sure to check out Franz displaying his marksmanship taking out an entire group of wild boar.
It’s for moments like this that the Smith & Wesson model 500 was created.

Watched it. Wow.
Hmmmm, I didn’t know yelling at a charging bear would work.
This guy’s got balls of steel!
Better off with a hunting rifle like he has. Fortunately he didn’t have to shoot. I’d hate to have to shoot a mama bear with young cubs. Still the story isn’t as dramatic once you know he could have killed the bear at any time.
Chuckle! I wouldn't go hunting unless I was equipped to "kill the bear at any time." Like someone wrote: "Balls of Steel."
Nice break from election coverage!
I’ve been in similar situation three times, Twice with bears (no cubs), twice with moose. Was charged once by moose with newborn but she broke it off when I hollered. Bears ran when I hollered also.
That bear mauling from the other day? Certainly sows with cubs are dangerous but...
Somehow I didn’t think we were getting the full story on that one.
He could have killed the bear at any time if he hit the right spot under duress. Miss by a few inches and he could have been in real trouble.
Yes, making noise confuses them enough to back off a little until they get an image of what the noise is in a fit to their other senses.
Most animals are more scared of humans than vice versa, loud noise disturbs the normal sensory load.
Most bears will run away from loud noise with an exception of a mother bear with cubs. She can be aggressive beyond any expectation to protect her cubs or to get them food.
So in that sense, yes it was the worst of situations and this hunter was fortunate. I would not be with a shotgun and a repeating rifle. I would spray some shot in front of a bear to scare it off if yelling didn’t work. If it was a lion, I wouldn’t mess around with trying to scare it off, I would shoot to kill.

FAL or M14, 20 rounds of grief and if that does not work, resign yourself to being bear food.
There are a lot of bear attacks going on around the forest.
Look at this one from Macnamee, New Brunswick, Canada, just a few miles from where we live, where there are 5 bears eating a wild apple crop on our land!

Nom, nom, NOM!
Jim Fowler (Wild Kingdom) tells the story of when he accidentally came face to face with a lion. He said he just screamed in terror and the lion ran off.
Nasty man, he hit a mother bear in the face with a piece of wood? How dare he?
I want to see a picture of the 5 bears eating apples!
Three moose charges with me, two cows with calves, one bull moose after my young dog. Pulled my pistol twice but didn't have to use it. The other time I had a 9' 5wt fly rod and did my Zorro imitation.
They are damn dangerous and I was humbled by their size. And, to be honest ... more than a little scared.
My understanding is you don’t try to kill a bear with the first shot.
The idea is to keep them off all fours by disabling the front shoulder girdle with your first shot. From there you have options, because they can no longer run you down on all fours.

That’s difficult, they generally only are around at night, and stumbling around out there in the dark among them is dangerous.
However I can take pictures of the many pounds of digested apple sauce they leave behind!
If you send 20 rounds of 30.06 or .308 downrange and she doesn’t go down it is time to call in an airstrike. That’s not a bear, that’s an APC with fur.
