Beretta had its version of a compact semi-automatic sniper rifle on display at Modern Day Marine 2016.
The ARX200, chambered for 7.62mm NATO, is the rifle Beretta was designing for the U.S. Armys Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System competition awhile back.

Want.
And the aforementioned AR-10 will have an 18 to 20 inch barrel, which works better for 7.62. It suffers in a 16 inch barrel more than 5.56 does.
Pass.
Phooey.
would go well with a white wine and a desert eagle
A sniper rifle with a 16 inch barrel? Do they mean a scout-sniper? Looks heavy and bulky to me.
I was at Modern Day Marine expo yesterday. I guess I missed the Beretta booth. I did visit SIG, FN and Barrett.
Looks a lot like the SCAR
Someone at Beretta was thinking.
A shootout between this and the M110 out to 1,000 yards would be interesting.
Not clear what this toy brings that the AR10 platform does not.
As an Infantryman in the ‘80’s and even till today, I have long thought that the AR-10 was a better choice of a battle rifle than the AR-15 line.
Yes the rounds are heavier and take up more space, but they are less inclined to deflection in heavy undergrowth and provide a greater stand off distance than the AK. A 600 to 800 yard shot with iron sights is achievable with good skills from the shooter.
“Looks a lot like the SCAR”
Exactly, an imitation of the original. If I was in the market, and I’m absolutely not, I’d go FN SCAR in 7.62 (.308) with the after market aluminum lower that can accept readily available and cheaper non-proprietary mags, gets pricey but what the hey. That’s just me, just say’n. The ELCAN glass is a nice choice, again pricey but makes for a nice rig. Wish I could afford that setup.
Indeed. No proprietary mags for me.....this is why the SCAR17 was crossed off my list. When will these companies learn?
My own ballistic testing shows that there is minimal velocity loss between a 24" vs. 20" barrel for 308 Win (40fps per inch). I've not chrono'd a 16" for this cartridge, so I do not how how long the drop will remain roughly linear.
But I can tell you that the terminal effectiveness of the 223 suffers considerably when going from a 20" to 16" barrel. The projectile requires velocities >2500fps to produce effective terminal performance. In a 20" barrel this means that the 223 has ideal performance out to 125 yards. In a 16" barrel, this effective distance is reduced to <75 yards.
Between the two I'd take a 308 out of 16" under any circumstances. The new scout rifles by various manufacturers (Ruger, Mossburg to name two) come with 16.5" tubes. This would be a handy and effective package for someone looking for a dual-purpose rifle (hunting, tactical). I already have a SOCOM 16 (Springfield Armory), so I'm set.
To be fair, 308 is going to stomp all over 5.56 fired from any reasonable length barrel. For short range applications (less than 50 yards) 5.56 from a 16” barrel makes sense. It maintains its best terminal performance at that range.
308 works in that configuration as well, but I start thinking about things like muzzle rise and speed of follow up shots in that scenario.
Not to say 308 won’t work in that application. It does, I just think 5.56 is very well suited to it, especially considering 55gr ball still gets right at 3000 fps from a 16” barrel.
308 is better as a cartridge for an all purpose survival rifle IMO.
