One in five Windows-powered devices steered to a host of U.S. government websites in March ran Windows 10, according to preliminary data.
For the first time, Windows 10 accounted for more than one-fifth of the visits to sites tracked by the Digital Analytics Program (DAP), which mines traffic to more than 4,000 websites on over 400 different domains maintained by U.S. government agencies, such as the Internal Revenue Service and the National Weather Service.
The bulk of the visits to DAP websites originate in the U.S.
Through Thursday, Windows 10 recorded 20.2% of visits in March by Windows PCs, smartphones and tablets. That was a one-percentage point increase from February and more than two percentage points above January's.
Although Microsoft irregularly trumpets the number of devices running Windows 10 -- the last time was nearly three months ago -- data from DAP and metrics vendors like Net Applications and StatCounter are the only publicly available sources for monitoring Windows 10 adoption.
But these external measurements are rough at best.
A case in point: Because overall traffic to DAP websites plummets on weekends -- total visits by Windows devices on Saturday and Sunday are typically less than half that of a weekday -- Windows 10 may be unrepresented, as more Windows PCs used during the work week are business machines, which predominantly run the corporate standard, Windows 7.
Microsoft has just over four months left to boost Windows 10 adoption by pushing the free upgrade to eligible Windows 7 and 8.1 devices. That deal is set to expire July 29, on the one-year anniversary of Windows 10's launch.

Really? personally I’d place vista near the bottom.
But it’s really easy to pass 20% share when they’re giving w10 away for free (if you have win7/8).
I find my self firmly fastened, probably forever, in the Windows 7 portion of that graph.
Tricks, scams, and non-consensual downloads through updates is not popularity and market share. Microsoft is like a guy giving women roofies, then bragging that all the women want to sleep with him.
Windows 10 is essentially a date rape operating system.
I finally broke down and installed it. It may be better than Windows 8, which was horrible and came on my laptop. Hate the new browser Edge, but at least you can still use IE, thought the switchover hid all the links to it and I had to set up a new shortcut.
I am staying with Windows 7 throughout president Trumps 2 terms!

Get WIndows 7...much more stable and faster than Vista.
I bought a Windows 10 based computer, and returned it! (Walmart takes back new computers with full refund).
I actually love win 10. Everything is easier and better once you get the hang of it. For me that took less than 2 days.
I have Windows 7 Vista and keep deleting the pop up’s asking me to download Windows 10. I think they are giving up because I only get one invitation a month now,

That is only because 80% of that 20% didn't manage to prevent Microshaft from "upgrading" their win 7 machines to Win 10 without their consent...
More and more people could not stop it installing itself over their favored versions.
I completely agree with your assesment of ms-windows. I started playing around with linux in 96, made the switch in 97 and never looked back. I used to be a big Apple naysayer as well, since a friend is in the video/entertainment industry and everything to him is Apple. So a few weeks ago I was with a friend shopping for a new computer. She took one look at the macbook-mini and that was it. Beautiful, no nonsense little machine. I have hense given up my anti-mac views.
With Win 10, no more double posts.
It's worse than anyone imagined.
Every time it breaks, EVERY useful program that we pay hundred$ for must be re-installed.
