A 20-year-old horse is recovering after being shot more than 100 times with paintballs. Lily is recovering at the New Bolton Center in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
"In 15 years, I've never seen another paintball case," New Bolton Center veterinarian Dr. Rose Nolen-Walston said. "You can tell she's a sweetie and you can tell she's happy to be getting some food and some care."
Omega Horse Rescue's Kelly Smith found Lily at the New Holland Horse Sale Stables in Lancaster County on Monday after the horse auctions. They found no sign of an owner and believed her to be abandoned at the stables. They called the SPCA and Smith took Lily to New Bolton.
"It was deplorable," Smith said. "Her eye was swollen shut. The other one she can't see out of. Her head was hanging down. She was very depressed."
Dr. Nolen-Walston said tests are being to done make sure Lily is in good health. She is in isolation to prevent disease and is being fed a certain diet to help her, as she is underweight. Dr. Nolen-Walston said the paintballs caused body soreness but no permanent damage.
"If you look at her she's obviously a very old, debilitated horse, who can't defend herself," Dr. Nolen-Walston said.
"I hope that her remaining days can be found with someone who is going to love her and appreciate her," Smith said.
Now, they are looking for a new home for Lily while officials search for her original owner.
They said they are working with the Lancaster County district attorney's office is opening an animal abuse case. In Pennsylvania, animal abuse is a summary offense.
If you would like to donate to help Lily with her recovery, you are asked to send your donations to the Omega Horse Rescue.

One thing for sure, I don’t have weapons to defend myself against animals.
People. What you have to watch out for. Assholes like this.
I have difficulty understanding the callous nature of a human that would do such a thing. But I don’t have any difficulty expressing the pleasure I would have returning the favor if I were to catch them in the act.
[a fantasy punishment]
Find the guys responsible, strip them naked, provide face protection, tie them to a post, and shoot them with paintball loaded with blue leather dye. Itching powder optional. Video record and post on Youtube.
Wow, someone needs to fund the perp and do the same to them. Anyone who would do this to an animal doesn’t deserve to be called human.
Disgraceful (not the recovery, the abuse.)
Poor thing! Goodness, I dislike people sometimes.
A horse of a different color? The punishment seems obvious.
To shot 100 paintballs, is mentally sick...
Obviously, the horse was fearful and in pain...
Future mass murderer or serial killer...
when caught...Lock them up now...
Tie them naked to a post out in the wilderness. Shoot them many, many times with paintballs full of honey and peanut butter. Walk away and let the bears and coyotes have their way with them.
I REALLY hate people sometimes.
....if they really want to, animal rescue people will make sure the perps are caught
This is one of those articles where I get really scared when I read it, because if I caught someone doing this I don’t know if I could control myself. Assault I believe has a max. of 7 years in prison, then there’s manslaughter, murder, either way it all comes down to self control doesn’t it but you get people like this who REALLY test the limit.

This article was posted previously.......just sayin
Sure - throw in fire ants for good measure.
Animals are the smartest things on earth. I’ve lost all faith in humanity!
Horrible. Some people are sub-human.
These acts of mindless cruelty by kids often bring to mind an incident here in the Seattle area around 10 years ago where a sweet natured little burro at a petting zoo in Bellevue (Posada) was bludgeoned to death one night by some local teenagers. They did it just for the hell of it. Just for the hell of it.
