I Hope You've Been Paying Attention
Facebook ^ | 28 February 2016 | Matt Walsh

Posted on 02/28/2016 3:32:56 PM PST by ShadowAce

I hope if you've been paying attention these past few days, you're beginning to understand my position, and why I've been so forceful, consistent, and aggressive in my advocacy of it. Many of you already understood, but certainly there are many others who still need to figure it out.

In just the last couple of days, Donald Trump has promised reprisals against his critics when he's elected president, pledging to "open up" libel laws so that he can punish anyone who writes "negative" or "false" stories about him. He said his critics "will have problems" when he's in power. Remember, Trump claims that EVERY critique of him, no matter how true, is "false," so he is clearly vowing to outlaw all criticism of government. If Obama had said anything even remotely in the neighborhood of this when he was running for president, every conservative in the country would've exploded with rage (justifiably). But Trump said it and it hardly sparked much of a backlash at all.

Then Trump proceeded to retweet a quote from Benito Mussolini, the Fascist dictator, and later admitted that he knew the quote was from Mussolini but decided to distribute it anyway. To be clear, for anyone who isn't versed in recent world history, quoting Mussolini is exactly morally analogous to quoting Hitler. It would be like Trump finding a passage in Mein Kampf and sympathetically reading it at one of his rallies.

Finally, this morning Trump refused to repudiate David Duke and the KKK. Later on Twitter he backpedaled, but when asked on TV if he would denounce the white supremacists who've endorsed him, Trump dodged. He was pressed specifically on denouncing the KKK and he refused. The KKK, people. Donald Trump was reluctant to say, "Yes, obviously I disown the KKK and object to everything they say and do." Initially Trump avoided the question by saying he has to investigate the KKK to figure out if he agrees with them or not.

Now, guys, this was all in the span of just three days. And it should be noted that a great number of his fans cheered him on when he promised to censor speech and defended him when he quoted Mussolini and refused to criticize white supremacy. I said last week that the scariest thing about Trump is that he's running as a tyrant, unabashedly so, and his fans want him BECAUSE of it. His fans are explicitly asking for Trump to rule as an emperor. They don't desire freedom or liberty anymore, and they don't give a damn about the Constitution. What they want is a political Strongman who will "restore America's greatness" through brute and oppressive force.

I should remind you, historically, this plan has never worked out well for the common man. Just ask the folks who lived under Trump's mentor in fascist Italy.

We are watching our nation march headlong into tyranny and despotism, and the cattle following along are quite aware of, and enthusiastic about, where the cattle train is going. While Trump will not repudiate white supremacy, his fans have indeed repudiated freedom and independence, and are desperately asking their Great Master to subjugate them for the good of the country.

It's madness and it must be stopped. If you can't see that now, you never will -- until it's too late.

Trump said he wants to be able to sue those who LIE about him. That’s not a violation of the “freedom of press.” That’s simply good laws and not offering a protected status to those who lie. Quit mis-representing Trump’s stances Matt Walsh. It’s simply not working.

Mussolini was a national socialist, and therefore has more in common with bern sanders and hillary clinton.

I am not impressed by gotcha’s

Also, Trump asked for clarification on these groups he is supposed to disavow. I will therefore conclude he does not run with that crowd and does not know of their beliefs.

If we don’t stop the immigration - both legal and illegal, we won’t have a Country.

Presidents have no bearing over a civil case such as libel.

Anyone who take Trump at his word on any of the crap that comes out of his mouth should be examined. He does it for attention. He does it to throw red meat to the people who support him.

He is not my candidate, but they all are blowhards about the “stuff” they are going to do. Just read their tax plans. None of them have any chance of happening.

Yes. I'm for building a wall (and a minefield) as well as the deportation of all illegals (with a permanent ban on return).

Note that if the IRS contends you owe them more than $50,000, your passport can already be confiscated under new law. And as we've seen, the IRS can and will be politicized to attack citizens as "enemies."

Question: If a POTUS decides to implement his will with pen and phone to build a wall while bypassing Congress, why shouldn't we expect DHS under such a man to also use the wall to prevent citizens from leaving the country too?

He didn’t say anything about negative stories.

He was talking about outright lies.

Another stretch of the truth.

Trump said today on the Chris Wallace show that what he wanted to punish was/is news media who print what they know to be a lie and when confronted with the facts, refused to make a correction or retraction.

I don’t think that unreasonable.

A news paper would still be able to call you stupid, incapable, a nutcase lib, etc., but could not call you a crook without researching it first.

And I suspect that Congress will have something to say on the subject.

Actually I disagree to some extent because total freedom of speech and the press quickly displays all of the fools.

But then I have never been accused of being a member of the mob or a con man. I might have a less generous attitude if I had.

If Trump succeeds at changing the libel laws to get back at the mainstream media he very easily could come after all of us on this forum who are not his fans.

Is that what all of you Trumpsters really want?

Nothing has changed much...1983

“His alternating skills of charming some individuals and riding roughshod over others has earned Donald Trump a reputation in some quarters as someone not to be trusted. He reneged, for example, on a promise to donate to a museum the Art Deco bas- reliefs on the facade of Bonwit Teller’s - bulldozed to make way for Trump Tower. It was a sin deemed unforgivable by landmark preservationists. But the only negative comments about Donald Trump these days are given off the record.

why? might have something to do with lawyers...and y'all want him to have the Dept of Injustice, FBI, and NSA at his whim? Go for it. I bet the FBI which is chomping at the bit to hit hillary is dreading him being elected. If he is, I pray Cruz goes ballistic in the senate.

Time to overturn “ New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, 376 U.S. 254 (1969)” because as Scalia said...it was a bad & unconstitutional legislative overreach form the bench...

“Now the old libel law used to be (that) you’re responsible, you say something false that harms somebody’s reputation, we don’t care if it was told to you by nine bishops, you are liable,” Scalia continued. “New York Times v. Sullivan just cast that aside because the Court thought in modern society, it’d be a good idea if the press could say a lot of stuff about public figures without having to worry. And that may be correct, that may be right, but if it was right it should have been adopted by the people. It should have been debated in the New York Legislature and the New York Legislature could have said, ‘Yes, we’re going to change our libel law.’ But the living constitutionalists on the Supreme Court, the Warren Court, simply decided, ‘Yes, it used to be that … George Washington could sue somebody that libeled him, but we don’t think that’s a good idea any more.’”
