I have always wondered if people just say they were cleaning the gun because they are to embarrassed to say that they were playing with the gun?

You and me both.
How in the Hell do you NOT check and clear a firearm before attempting any cleaning/maintenance on it??? Treat every gun as if it’s always loaded. First damn thing you learn.

I'm with you. How in Heaven's name can a gun go off when cleaning it? You're either cleaning it, or you're pulling the trigger on a gun without know whether or not its loaded.
In order to shoot yourself or someone else unintentionally, you have to break all four rules of gun safety.
