Apple looks poised to sell 21 million watches in first year

Didn't think the Apple Watch would catch on? Not everyone agrees, especially analysts who study sales projections.

Cupertino is on track to sell 21 million watches and rake in about $8.4 billion in revenue in the first 12 months of the Apple Watch, according to one of the hottest Apple analysts around. Not bad for a company that entered the wearables game late.

The projections come from Asymco analyst Horace Dediu, who presented his findings at the Glance conference in San Francisco. The conference is headlined by a number of speakers, Dediu included, with observations on the impact of the Apple Watch.

Dediu's remarks were reported on Twitter by Philip Elmer-DeWitt, an editor at Fortune who is attending the conference. Cult of Mac attempted to reach Dediu, who was not immediately available for comment.

If Dediu is correct about Apple moving 20 million units in its first year (and he usually is), this would further cement Apple as the king of the fast-growing smartwatch segment. Only 6.8 million smartwatches were sold in 2014 by 89 companies, according to a report by Smartwatch Group, with Samsung leading the pack last year.

Apple's swift rise to the top would be further validation of the company's "second-mover advantage" -- the company is famous for waiting until it gets a product "right," even if that means not being first to market.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been coy about Apple Watch sales figures, saying only that they exceed company expectations. Apple is on pace to sell 7 million watches by the end of the year, according to projections by Asymco and others. Dediu said another 14 million are projected to sell during the first two quarters of 2016, Elmer-DeWitt reported.

The Apple Watch price has been slashed by $100 at Best Buy and other outlets for the holiday season, and Apple and is expected to roll out a second-generation watch in March. Glance Conference speakers said many prospective buyers are waiting for a newer version that runs more independently of the iPhone before adopting the watch.

In other conference news, research firm Wristly reports 40 percent of Apple Watch users say they have used their nose as an input device.

So go swimming for an hour with your Apple watch. I dare you! I have no worries about doing this with my water tight Casio. Casio has been in the watch business for ages so knows how to produce a time piece that will not go kaput when you go swimming for an extended time.

BOGUS! WATCH! by APPLE!

Dennis? I hate to break it to you, seeing as you are so convinced of your position, but being water resistant is not one of the prime definitions of a time piece or even a smartwatch. There are billions of watches in the world that are not water resistant even to the standard the Apple Watch meets. Live with it.

Take your Casio down to 300 meters for over the length of time it is rated for. . . and it will fail. Oops. Too bad. It's not "water tight" because it's only rated for 200 meters. So sad your BOGUS WATCH by CASIO isn't a watch. . . by your definition of not being "water tight" under your strawman criterion.

Ooh, oh wait. I know. Drop it into a pool of molten lava. Does it survive? NOOOO! My definition of a REAL watch is that it has to survive up to ten minutes, keeping perfect time while immersed in molten rock. If it doesn't. It's BOGUS! WATCH by CASIO!

See, Dennis, two can play at this game. WHEE! Fun. OOOH! Got a couple more. . .

Does your Casio survive being stomped on by sixteen Clydesdale horses and then run over by a fully loaded beer wagon? How about passage through a Black Hole???? If it doesn't it's not a real watch! It's BOGUS! WATCH! by CASIO!

I’ve had good luck with my Ironman, I really like it!

If Apple doesn’t make the Watch waterproof I may get a Garmin Swim.

Yeah, I read that.

I actually considered it, as it’s a really great tool that would help me considerably, but I’m just leery about spending all that money, then destroying it by swimming with it!

See ya’,

I bought a fake Apple Watch for $27 at CES
http://mashable.com/2015/01/08/fake-apple-watch-ces/#MM0VXO.bgsqL

LAS VEGAS— It will likely be at least two months before the highly anticipated Apple Watch hits shelves, but at least one company has already made a knockoff.

In the back of one of the smaller halls at CES, a Chinese company was showing off fake Apple Watches. So, naturally, I bought one.

The watch, created by Shenzhen-based Hyperdon is actually called “Smart Watch,” and it almost looks like the real deal — at least, upon first glance.

The watch’s screen only displays when it’s turned on, and many of its icons are blatant ripoffs of Apple designs. The pairing process took a few tries, but once connected to my iPhone 6, I was able to make phone calls and play music through the watch. It even vibrates when I get a call.

The watch can make and receive phone calls, and even vibrates with incoming calls.

The Smart Watch also has a pedometer, stopwatch, alarm and something called “Anti lost.” I wasn’t sure how this feature worked, at first; it gives you the option to “enable” or “disable,” but didn’t appear to do anything. However, a fellow reporter pointed out that “Anti lost” likely alerts you when you get out of Bluetooth range.

There is also a messaging and notifier feature that helps you get notifications from WeChat and other apps, but it requires downloading a sketchy-looking APK that I don’t think would work with an un-jailbroken iPhone.

The watch charges via a USB cable, and a Hyperdon representative claimed the battery life is “more than 180 hours,” which I have not yet tested.

And? You bought an Android piece of junk that was put in an Apple Watch look alike rip-off case and skinned to look like an Apple Watch OS. It has a Bluetooth phone connection for phone calls. Whoop-De-doo.

The seller may wish to be selling them at stores in the US, but it won't happen. US Customs will seize them on import when ever they are found and also when they are found being sold. They are being made in violation of quite a few copyright and design patent infringements both here and in China.

So what? They work great and are selling like hotcakes in China and Asia. Plus they can’t afford the ridiculously overpriced Apple watch. Apple needs to come out with a $50 Apple watch that is truly waterproof. Casio could help them for the right price.
In fact an Apple-Casio watch would be optimum

SAY NO TO THE BOGUS APPLE WATCH!!!!!!!

Anything that is selling as well as the Apple Watch at its current price is not overpriced, Baron.

The only thing that is selling like hotcakes in China and Asia is the Apple Watch -- at its current pricing structure . . . and if these knock-offs are selling at all, it is because wannabes have to have something they wanna be thought to be wearing, the Apple Watch.

As for "working well," Baron, read the review you posted. They don't. You have to physically turn it on -- with your other hand -- at which point it will light up for a few moments then go dark. It has only a few basic functions and that's it and no means of adding more. It's a bluetooth device with added simplistic functions and that's it.

This "Dumb Watch" only works with JAILBROKEN iPhones, which means that to even USE this watch with an iPhone you have to put your phone at risk of malware. That's a lot to require for minimal functions. It doesn't offer the functions that make the Apple Watch useful. Sorry, Baron, it's a POS and a failure even as a knock off fake.
