Windows-based tablets may have gotten off to a slow start, but things are changing, and changing fast. According to Strategy Analytics, Windows tablet shipments jumped 58 percent in the first nine months of 2015, and with the holiday shopping season in view, they'll reach 22 million shipments by the end of the year.
If that comes to pass, Windows will account for 10 percent of the global tablet market. That would still put Windows way behind Android (68 percent) and iOS (22 percent), but it's far better than the measly 1.7 percent of the smartphone market Windows owns (based on Gartner's data).
Looking ahead, Strategy Analytics believes that Windows will nearly double its share of the tablet market to 18 percent by 2019. Meanwhile, iOS is expected to bump up a single percentage point while Android will slide 9 percent.
"As the enterprise market becomes increasingly open to the wide scale deployment of Tablet platforms, Microsoft has a key advantage in that its operating systems are found on the vast majority of PC and servers within the enterprise, potentially providing a smoother integration of tablets using the Windows OS into the enterprise," said Peter King, Research Director for Tablet & Touchscreen Strategies at Strategy Anlystics. "Most, if not all, major vendors will have high to premium tier Windows Tablet offerings by the end of 2016 to address prosumers and enterprise currently served by Microsoft's Surface Pro line."
It's an interesting category, but one that's also a little bit challenging to analyze due to so many different form factors. In this instance, Strategy Analystics is taking into consideration 2-in-1 devices like the Surface Pro 4, Acer T100, and Lenovo Miix 700.
Competitive predictions of Windows tablet growth — iOS holding steady and Android losing ground — whaddya guys think?
Android is Google.
Google is Obama
I think Surface products are highly competitive and very cool.
That being said, I am not ready to upgrade. I find my Asus X205ta notebook running Windows 8 handles the Scrivener program just fine. ($120)
SP4 seems to be selling like hot cakes now. Saw several excited people buy one in Best Buy yesterday as I nabbed an iPad Pro.
If one can afford a Windows Tablet compared to a Android Tablet then sure I’d buy one...... Apple is out of the question.

I think this is good — 3 competitors will give sufficient profits and yet competition so that consumers get the best and innovation spreads
We just switched from Apple to Android (Samasung) or our phones and tablets.
Takes a little getting used to, but after the first week, it is getting better. We really like them.
Our family used to be totally apple.
4 apple computers, 6 tables, 2 phones, and 2 ipods.
Then apple went full on sodomite and even made a sodomite it’s CEO.
Now we dont have any apple products, are saving a ton and are very satisfied.
Apple products turn you into a sodomite?
I'd believe it. Mainly because MS is going to (heck, already is) marketing the heck out of their tablets. So they will pick up some market share. Maybe not as much as they'd like though. A few of my tech-savvy friends ah "in the younger generation" shall we say see the MS offerings as overpriced.
But marketing $ typically work, at least a little so I expect them to increase. On the other side of the coin though, Apple people tend to be very loyal to their brand. I wouldn't expect too many to jump ship. The small amount that does will probably be made up for by new converts. So I would see Apple holding steady.
The new consumer base for the developer just grew by well over 100,000,000! App shortages will disappear rapidly.
> Apple products turn you into a sodomite?
Wow, who knew? Well, the good news is...
Yes, we should all boycott Apple products because the company is LGBT-friendly. We should patronize Google and Microsoft because they aren't... oh, wait... nevermind.
And products made in Red China turn you into a Chinese Communist!!
Try boycotting all products made in mainland China. You'll be standing half-naked in a house with almost nothing in it.
Yeah, I agree. Three is a good number of top-tier competitors in a market, if you want the most progress and innovation, while everybody gets to keep their stockholders happy.
Even my non-sodomite calculator is an abacus.
I guess its back to fingers and toes. I’ve been told I have had my thumb up my butt, so don’t make me count over eight.
It is hard to say where the market is going. I wonder however, if Apple is gambling by not creating one common platform among its devices like Google and Microsoft? Microsoft needs the continuum to jump start a late and weak entry into the phone and tablet market.
I am one of the few that like window phone. Most of the IT guys at work, think it is the best phone experience but shy away because of the app situation. I had to go to google last year, tired of waiting for MS phone.. I may go back.
If you're male you can carry the one...
> I've been told I have had my thumb up my butt, so don't make me count over eight.
Wait... Eight? That implies you have BOTH thumbs up... nope, not going there, nope...
