Sometimes, it is the right thing to do. Especially, when owners repeatedly allow aggressive dogs to run loose.

I usually resent the cops shooting dogs but loose Pit Bulls is another story.

Three nights ago we were walking our Chihuahua Coco on a leash down the street in our neighborhood and all of a sudden maybe 75 yards away I see this large white Pit Bull running loose down by the lake. We know this dog as it trapped our neighbor, his hound dog and daughter up in a yard one night last year. So we stopped and very slowly were turning to go back to the house. That dog spotted us all the way from the lake and started heading for us barking and challenging us. I told Mr. GG2 just pull out the .40 cal and shoot it. So I picked up our dog and started back to the house and Mr. GG2 God love him charged at the dog yelling at it and took off. But its yuge and if it came after you and you were not armed you would get killed.

One of these days the people that own that dog are going to jail when it attacks some kid while running loose. Or its going to come in our yard and Mr. GG2 is going to shoot it. Where are the cops when you need them. LOL!

For all the folks who defend pit bulls, I ask if they would send their children outside to play? What if they were Labs or other typically non-violent dogs?

Okay, you got me. If my child was a Lab or other typically non-violent dog I would probably not send it out to play with a pit bull...

I own a mixed-breed pittie and she is the sweetest, gentlest dog I have ever known.

I think any kind of vicious dog running around loose is fair game for the cops.

When my son was either four or five, I saw him running as hard as he could from a big dog that was chasing him. I started running directly to that dog (and I was a medal winning running champion at college).

I knew I was going to kill that dog with my bare hands when I got to him (adrenalin killer mode). The dog saw me running toward him and he knew he was dead if I got there, so he screeched to a halt, turned and took off.

How did the dog know I would kill him? I was staring into his eyes without blinking as I ran and transmitting his death to him eye ball to eye ball. I’m sure :o) he was also calculating the speed of my run and he thought, “Oh, s-—, she can outrun me.”

Really, when a mom sees her kid in actual danger, no one is safe from that mom until the kid is safe.

At what of the scumbag owners who risked lives in the neighborhood?

Like all pitbull owners, these scumbags deserve prison.

We had a real sweet Pit Bull next door. They kept her in the yard. Mr. GG2 used to play with her and give her treats when he was over there. I wasn’t afraid of the dog but never trusted it. My hairdresser has a Pit named Tank who runs and hides if anything happens. Scared of its own shadow. And I think when they are mixed the other breed mellows out the Pit Bull. I’m sure your dog is a fine dog.

But overall they are just IMO not good companion animals.

Several years ago when Mrs. henkster and I were taking a walk in a nearby neighborhood, we were aggressively charged by a large dog. The Mrs. scares easily and was terrified. I immediately got between her and the dog and went into my defensive crouch and stared him down. He broke off his charge and retreated, but if he’d continued I was going to kill him with my bare hands. If dogs can sense fear, the opposite holds true.

When dogs made their deal with us 50,000 years ago, the terms were that there is only room for one master in the relationship, and it’s man, not dog. That deal has not changed.

I seldom tell someone what to do, but in this case, if I were you, I would go by the nearest police station to you, and describe this dog so the owners could be contacted to keep the dog contained or dog would be picked up and put down. You will likely be saving some child's or adult’s life. I really would do that and hope you think about doing it.

I have a 4 lb. Yorkie, she was on a leash and the neighbor across the street had her much larger Dachshund on a leash. We met to talk and her dog started charging my Yorkie. My Yorkie started trembling and flattened herself on the ground to be as small as she could be. I immediately picked her up and kept holding her as long as the lady and I talked.

Now, she made no effort to correct the dog from charging. Had he been my dog, he would have been corrected.

“but if he’d continued I was going to kill him with my bare hands. If dogs can sense fear, the opposite holds true.”

“kill him with my bare hands”. Both you and I thought that and both dogs sensed we were going to do that. I think I would have exploded in some way when I got to him. I could see myself picking him up and throwing him but don’t know what I would have actually done. However, I think my adrenalin rush would have given me the power to pick him up. At that time, I weighed about 115 lbs. if that much.
My drive was to get to the dog as fast as possible. I ran past my son and son kept running to the house.

Well, you and I are both killers if our family is in danger. :o)

Not a lot of outlaw cops killing dogs in this area unless they are causing problems. 1 pittie ok, 2 not so ok and 3 you got a pack.

In town they parade them on thick chain...not a good life for a dog.

I know, I know its the owners, not the breed. But put bad owners with breeds that can be bad and you have trouble.

I knew what I was going to do. I was going to smack him upside the head and then grab him by the throat and squeeze until he quit moving. I was ready to get scratched up a bit but I was going to be the one to walk away, and my wife was going to be untouched.

I have no doubt you would have done something similar, but the point is we didn’t have to. It’s the “pack instinct” all dogs have. They submit to power.
