I have a PP external HDD but I don’t run Windows 10. Thanks for the warning.
you should consider moving to a NAS setup (network addressable storage). if you setup a gigabit internal network, the speeds for your long storage is quite good.
as a bonus, you get mirrored backup and access from multiple systems.
I have a WD Ultra 2tb USB 3.0 mini-drive that I originally got when I had 8.1.
My approach to all of these things is to immediately format them to get rid of any bloat-ware or other junk taking up space.
I have recently done the upgrade to Win 10 and my drive reads perfectly. It is just another USB drive. I just now copied several MB of files to it to make sure and then deleted them. All good.
Copy the data off, format NTFS with win 10, replace the data and live happily ever after (with more space on your drive).
If there are just certain files you need to get from the drive, you might consider temporarily booting your system with a Linux live USB stick. (I use a PP with Linux...multiple distros...no problems)
You could copy the files or the directories to your NTFS hard drive on your computer and then use them that way.
Since you have already gone back to 8.x, do the copy/format/copy there. You do not need to do it in Win 10.
Yes I heard that on the Amazon forums a couple weeks ago. I also heard WD is working on a driver, but who knows?
The hardware should work. It’s probably the WD “SmartWare” that is not compatible with W10.
This is the first I have heard of any USB drives being incompatible with Win-10.
One thing I might mention - Just because Windows loaded a driver for a device (in this case a USB driver) it doesn’t mean that it is what the manufacturer prefers you to use. You may find a Windows-10 driver at your computer manufacturer website that more effectively controls the hardware.
...just a thought.
BTTT.

I scanned for reported solutions and one person reports the win 10 issue was only seen when using the WD Passport on a USB 2 port, but worked OK when used on a USB 3 port. You might check that out.
Did I miss windows 9?
I burned an ISO disk of Windows 8 and then did a clean install, just keep hitting the ‘skip’ or ‘not now’ buttons during validation and it will self validate later.
Since installing Windows 10, I’ve been trying to install Linux_mint 17.02, Trouble is, it will not discover the network, despite being hard wired and known working equipment.
And UEFT kinda sucks for people that like to tinker.
You could maybe open up the device manager and then see if the drive is found when plugged in, or if it pops up with an error message or greyed out (present but unavailable). This doesn’t necessarily solve the problem, but it might lead to more information.
I have of the 4 TB WD drives. Never crashed on me. I must have a great luck on XT HD’s as my maxtor’s from 2006 are still running great.
Effing W10. Totally useless..
You may have already seen this:

Maybe something in there can help.
After trying Windows 8... I decided that I preferred Windows 7. I am definitely not going to Windows 10 unless there is some compelling reason to do so.
My backup external HDD is in love with my new Win10 machine. I’d have to look at it to see if it’s WD, but I think it is.
I will echo what someone else said here...get rid of the crap that comes on the drive. It used to screw me up.
I bring them home, format them, and move on.
My WD Passport is working on 10 as before on 8.0. I have a copy of that WD Passport on another Toshiba drive that is working on 10 after an upgrade from 8.1. Also, I have a WD MyBook that is working with 10 after an upgrade from 7 Home Media.
