Explanation: This is the mess that is left when a star explodes. The Crab Nebula, the result of a supernova seen in mysterious filaments. The filaments are not only tremendously complex, but appear to have less mass than expelled in the original supernova and a higher speed than expected from a free explosion. The featured image, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, is presented in three colors chosen for scientific interest. The Crab Nebula spans about 10 light-years. In the nebula's very center lies a pulsar: a neutron star as massive as the Sun but with only the size of a small town. The Crab Pulsar rotates about 30 times each second.

Mmmmmmm.....crab legs.....with melted butter.....mmmmmmmm.
Considering the star exploded 1100 years ago, and the nebula is already more than a light year across, the speed of the expanding stellar debris is impressive.
“This is the mess that is left when a star explodes.”
Alec Baldwin got mad again? I warned him this would happen.
“You lose your temper again and you’ll explode!”
Never understood why they call this the “Crab” Nebula? Looks nothing like a crab to me.
WADR, I think you meant the first light from the explosion of the star arrived here 1100 years ago. I didn’t see the distance in light years to the location to figure out how long ago the explosion actually took place.
Some interesting speculation on Thunderbolts.info about nebulae.
Thanks for all you do here Sunkenciv, I'm a big fan of your threads.
Looks more like the Abalone Nebula.
I should have posted a warning in the ping message for those with shellfish allergies.
Good point!
Thanks misanthrope.
Really Nice!
One of my favorites.
True, we saw an explosion 1000 years ago that happened long ago, just as the image of a nebula over a light year across we see now was also what it looked like a long time ago.

Imagine a nearby star that had an advanced civilization on it that saw this slow motion explosion heading their way.
961 years ago for us but maybe 100 years or less. What would or could they do to survive?
I guess they would have been killed off by the gamma rays or turned into Green Hulks....
Gamma ray burst equivalent of a million trillion suns.
