SALT LAKE CITY Brigham Young University remains one of the most hostile campuses in the country for gay and transgender students, according to an annual college ranking list.
But the private university does not top the list of LGBT-unfriendly schools. In fact, it came in sixth in a list of 10, mostly religious, schools. Grove City College (Grove City, Pa.) a Christian liberal arts school of 2,500 students. and Hampden-Sydney College, an all-male liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in Hampden Sydney Va., came in first and second.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that same-sex attraction is not a sin, but that acting on it is.
The Princeton Review, which rates the academic and social traits of campuses nationwide, recently released a number of annual Top 20 lists. On the other end of the spectrum, Emerson College in Boston was named the most accommodating to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
This years BYU ranking is especially noteworthy. During the 2015 legislative session, Utah lawmakers, gay-rights advocates and Mormon leaders hammered out an anti-discrimination law that extends housing and employment protections to LGBT people while also safeguarding some religious liberties.
The legislation, which makes it illegal to discriminate against gay and transgender people in some instances, was hailed as a momentous compromise. But it does not apply to every entity in the state. BYU is exempt.
Students at BYU do not have to be Mormons, but they must have an endorsement from a faith leader and also sign the schools Honor Code.
In response to a request for comment on the ranking, BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins pointed to a statement on the schools website.
A students stated same-gender attraction does not preclude them from attending BYU, the statement reads. The university welcomes as full members of the university community all whose behavior meets university standards.
The contract also forbids alcohol and premarital sex, so its little surprise the campus of about 30,000 also ranked No. 1 on the list of stone-cold sober schools.
For the 2015 rankings, Princeton Review staff members surveyed about 136,000 students at 380 schools.
The survey includes 80 questions, with subject matter ranging from coursework to attitudes of fellow students.
Here are the top 10 most LGBT unfriendly schools, according to the Princeton Review:
1. Grove City College, Grove City, Penn.
2. Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden-Sydney, Va.
3. College of the Ozarks, Point Lookout, Mo.
4. Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill.
5. University of Tennessee in Knoxville
6. Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah
7. Gordon College, Wenham, Mass.
8. Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Mich.
9. Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Mich.
10. Baylor University, Waco, Texas
Yawn!
So, don’t go there if you’re gay.
easy.
BYU is NOT a Christian school. Mormons are unsaved and are on their way to hell.
And? Lopadektomites have plenty of places they can wear eye makeup and dresses.
Most of the schools listed here are ones which also teach from a classical core.
Sorry, but BYU is NOT a Christian college. They do not believe in Jesus Christ.
Meanwhile, at West Point and other Buddhist schools...
Glad to see Hillsdale on the list. Fiercely independent. No gvt funds.
You would be correct to say that “THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints” does not teach many of the the dogmas of mainstream traditional “Christian” churches of our day, but to say that the church does not believe in Jesus Christ of the New Testament is false. www.lds.org
Likewise, it is true that Jesus, a Jew, did not teach or condone many of the mainstream traditional dogmas of Judaism when he walked among men either, while he still did revere and honor Moses, Abraham and others whose scriptural record he believed. Being a “mainstreamer” no more automatically makes one “right” today than it did 2,000 years ago.
Good to know,’for us too. who wants their kid to put up with that crap, and hve our money funding homofascists and
Hey, my alma mater is in this list!!!
They are also a work college. Every student has an on campus job to pay their tuition.
Imagine that! That’s just crazy talk!
Thanks for setting the Calvinist morons straight. I like Mormons a lot better than morons.

Mormonism falsely teaches that Christ was created, instead of never created nor made, but eternally God.
Cults always get that wrong.
Sorry, Pal. You won't find anywhere in the NT that the true Christ is the brother of Satan. You probably should do a little study of "their" Jesus" before "correcting" me. And until recent years, the Mormons did their best to distance themselves from the real Christ. Mormonism is a cult, pure and simple. What they believe in is bizarre as the planet Kolob (check that one out too). But in no way is Mormonism anywhere a Christian religion.
Hmmm. Interesting, and yet, not so much. I think the transgendered people are beginning to wear out their welcome.
“Bruce” Jennner, the “I am Jazz” show on the Discovery channel, the woman (?) on Orange is the New Black...
Now in Ontario they want to put transgendered bathrooms in high schools, I think (last time I visited a public bathroom, there were stalls, so anyone could visit one and do what they needed to do without making young adolescent girls (like my daughter) feel uncomfortable.
As Oscar Wilde would have said, this is a love that needs to learn when to shut up.
BYU, other Christian schools ranked among the least LGBT-friendly campuses
Doubtful. They would be very friendly and would willing share the Word with anyone. Problem is the homosexuals and other perverts are not interested in the Word. They want their perversions validated and accepted as normal.
